Bartolini MM Humbuckers

Hey all,

Got my vette $$ bo 4 a few days ago. Awesome bass.

I have heard of a few people on here who have, or intend to switch their MECs for Barts. I am very happy with my MECs as they are, and I have the best tone I've ever had from a bass, but I would like to know what else the barts have to offer apart from being covered (I love the look of the open pole MECs :twisted. Is their output hotter than MECs? Brighter? If anyone owns a $$ on which they changed their pups to Barts, please let me know what noticable changes there were in sound

i heard that the barts might have a lower output, but sounds like it has a little more low end and mids... from what i hear, you love the stock MEC pickups, go with what you already know and love and save the cash, stick with the MECs

I also own a $$ BO and love to use Bartolini J pups in my Corvette fretless and Thumb NT, but I do not want to replace my MEC MMs with Barts because one of the things that attracted me to the $$ was the look of the big open pole pieces.

The only advantage the Barts would give is to have a single-coil mode that's noise-free, if you get their quad-coil MMs. But you will lose some aggressiveness and edge that the MECs excel at.

I just see no justifiable advantage to switching out the MECs in the $$ - they look and sound perfect for that bass!

This is only a guess, but it may be because adding the second in-line coil changes the tone quite a bit. Bill Bartolini does a good job of tuning his dualies for a close to authentic vintage single-coil tone, but it's not easy to do, since you are fighting against the laws of physics. I'm not sure how many other pickup manufacturers, if any, make passive dual in-lines... Most just make active pups and let their internal electronics do the tweaking. To me, that's like digital vs. analog...

I still have 3 out of my 4 stingrays to sell, gah. But at least I decided to kill my credit card by getting both PNUTs sooner rather than later, Im glad I did!!!!!

I think I'll stick with my MECs. I am very much in love with my tone, and won't be changing it any time soon. I don't like the idea of covering the poles... they just look so damn cool :twisted: I was just curious as to why people made the changes. Thanks again guys!

and congratulations boston asphalt on your purchase of the P-NUT I and II. Should keep the GAS at bay for a while at least :wink:

For awhile I was strongly considering putting Bartolini's in my $$ NT. In the end, I decided not to mess with a good thing. Hopefully someday I'll go for a Custom Shop $$, and it will have Barts...

yes, 1000000% percent the fault of the attitude of the company. I love my stingrays, but I want to start saving money, and while I could sell pretty much any of my basses, I would rather get rid of the ones from the guys who are so damned "innovative" that they changed the heel from 6 bolts to 5 for the 20th anniversary stingray 5! They represent everything that is evil, ignorant and wrong in this world.
