Approximating the Streamer Stage II with a Corvette

Which of the many Warwick Corvette models would be most likely to approximate the tones of a Streamer Stage II?

My finances are pretty limited and I've recently been looking at some of the corvettes on ebay but I'm torn as to which model of the many I should go for. The standard bubingas (passive and active) and prolines seem to be the most common around but I'm not sure which I would be best suited to, can anyone weigh in?

Disclaimer: Obviously I'm not going to get the exact tone but would any of the corvette models come close?
 
if the the financial allows that:
1. corvette cs
2. corvette $$ nt bubinga
3. corvette std bubinga active
other wise you start with number 3 :wink:
 
+1 I got my SS2 for 1800 about 2 years ago. That's a savings of 3k over new price. Plus I got a Wenge neck.

Custom shop yes, but I get the impression that the OP is about USED basses [talk of ebay and what's 'most commonly around']. So in this case I think the custom shop is not Ye Olde Warwick Custom Shoppe, but more like "In my Basement" :-)

The corvette std bubinga active/active is the closest. But is still very far...

First of all, both of those are discontinued. Second of all, the CT (Chrome Tone) is a streamer, and it's quite rare, I think. And third, The CT has a maple body, and I think bubinga is closer to afzelia.

One of the huge differences between corvettes and the SSII is the neck construction.

As I said, you should save up some extra money and find a bargain, they're not to rare and you won't regret it ;)

As some of you have guessed my budget is currently limited to used lower-end warwicks (so discontinued models are ok) and will remain so for some time. In the future (many years away yet) I definately will buy a Stage Streamer II but for the mean time I would like to get as close as possible to tide me over! :lol:

So far I've heard a couple of conflicting things. I've heard people suggest that the bubinga standard would be the best bet, but I've also heard people suggest the proline. In a thread I saw a while back comparing the models of corvette the bubinga standard and the proline were at opposite ends of the scales tonewise.

What do you guys think about this? Which would be a better approximation?

Also are there any sites that I could hear clips of these models? THere's a couple vids on youtube but the sound quality on some makes it hard to compare.

Chrome Tone is a finish,that's been discontinued. :wink:
 
corvette STD bubinga active is the cheapest choice. But waiting for the real bargain is a better idea.

The Corvette Standard Bubinga, particularly with active J's, would get my vote - and can be found used at a great price...

Thanks flipper_gv. I used to own a Bubinga Vette ST. active and it didn't sound like this. Damn good bass though.
 
Imho,if you want that stage 2 sound,you have to buy a stage 2.

Is that all I had to say? But seriously, one of the best things about Warwick basses is thier tones are unique from model to model. 4,5 and 6 string Thumbs, NT and BO all sound different to me. All of my basses were good stand ins until I got what I really wanted.

True, nothing really sounds like a SSII, or a thumb.
 
Ok, well I guess I'll have to accept that I'm probably not gonna get there with a corvette.

So, are there any sites where I can hear clips of a proline and a bubinga standard so that I can see which tones I prefer?

What I want is a growly bass that is versatile as well if that's possible. Would any lower end Warwick models (preferrably a corvette model) meet that criteria?

I'd also like to say thank you for your help everyone, you're an informed bunch over here that's for sure! :D
