Surely they would know what products they can order/supposed to carry but you'd be surprised.

I'm curious what music school you went to though. I went to the Ontario College of Percussion and Music () for several months. Their bass teacher Kevin is mostly a fretless player and I started taking lessons with him shortly after I got my first fretless. Great guy - had I not moved away, I would have kept taking the lessons with him.

Yes that was it. I started with them back when they operated at Leaside back in 2001. I wish I continued but work and regular life got in the way.

The only $$ was a Rockbass model. Some MIK vettes and a really nice MIK Star bass.

Oh I know, but if you're insistent and have part and model numbers, you can get them to place calls blindly and maybe the people on the other end will know.

Yeah, I went in yesterday to check them out. I was surprised to see a fretless PS Vette in there. Had any of the PS Standard Corvettes (not the $$) been 5 stringers, I likely would have bought one, but none of them really spoke to me. I was hoping to find a 6'er or maybe some other 5'ers (Thumb, Streamer, or standard Corvette). Oh well, the search will continue. I know I can order new, but I'm not a hundred percent sure of exactly which Wick I want at this time.

As far as the distributor situation I haven't dealt with the main distributors in North America but I find its mostly the stores themselves that don't hire the right people who really care about what they are paid for. If you don't know what products are hanging on your wall maybe retail is not for you.

It got better, because Steve's in Montreal used to be so terrible, it lost most of its business to Italmelodie. Now they stopped being assholes and people came back.

They do sell Warwick's if you want to order from them though. Italmelodie used to be the only warwick retailer in Montreal, but IIRC, they stopped carrying them (fun fact, they don't carry fender at all too, and it's the biggest guitar store in Montreal).
 
Well that's the reason I stopped going to the Toronto one - I had an encounter, dare I say encounters, with such an insufferable asshole at Steve's I decided never to give them a dime again. I believe he was the manager, too.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was the manager.

I was once told as I'm walking into Steve's if I will buy something. I said that I first need to see what they have inside. The guy working there said if I don't plan on buying something today I have no business going in. I ended up going to Long & McQuade at Ossington and that has been my go to place for all my music equipment since 2001. That is until I moved to Germany.

REALLY??? That is extremely rude.

Me, it was the fact that I was 16 but saved up a TON of cash for a serious bass and they wouldn't let me try a Spector I liked. After that, I told myself I would never make a major purchase at Steve's. Ended up spending less than expected on a used Fender American Deluxe jazz bass.

Had to have been the same guy. He told us to turn down - we did. He came back later saying we didn't turn down enough, that this wasn't a playground, and essentially demanded we buy a bass. When it became apparent that we weren't interested in the import Fenders and Squiers surrounding us, he told us to leave and escorted us to the door.

I swear by the Ossington L&M - I bring all my big jobs there, and they've always been amazing. Got them to wire my Buzzard with a 3-band MEC EQ (they phoned me to ask what pot layout I wanted!!), got them to do routing, and got them to troubleshoot. It's the only place in the area I brought a bass to and they had an idea of what to do (I've had people tell me it won't work because the pickup isn't original....).

It was so long ago I wouldn't even remember what he looked like but by the sounds of it, it must be the same guy.

The folks at Ossington L&M are the best. Sales, service whatever that places always had great people, well there was one guy who was forced to work there because he owned them a lot of money but otherwise it is a great place.

He said half his pay went back to Long & McQ. He was only there for 8 months, must have been a simple trade they did.
Hey I wouldn't have minded working there whatever the situation, and I did owe them a lot for like 2 years haha
 
I would recommend that you pop in and out of Long and McQuade whenever you can. I did this for a few months and found a pretty sweet 2001 Corvette Proline at a great price.

You can get crazy deals there sometimes. They had a used F-Bass for like $1700.
