Here's my very short review:

So, I just installed this from the retail version. I used the upgrade edition to upgrade from my windows vista 64 bits. Installation went smoothly and I didn't lose any programs or files (and I got some very obscure programs here, that still works perfectly). The difference in performance is noticeable, nothing drastic, but far better than any 100$ physical upgrade could buy me for my laptop. The new functionalities work great, it can actually find solutions for the errors. No bugs. All my stuff like my external sound card still work properly, the drivers being the same that from vista. But, don't think it be totally different from vista, very much similar look but the biggest difference is "under the hood". More efficient in how it works (aka it uses less CPU and flash memory).

Overall, a very nice upgrade from vista, the home premium edition being totally worth it for the vast majority of users (and regedit is there, which was absent in vista home premium, which totally sucked). I highly recommend Windows 7 for anyone looking for a more stable OS without having to go with Linux. Absolutely no compatibility problems were found yet. IMO the best windows ever released.

The new taskbar, similar in a way to the dock used on mac but with more functionalities, like to "peek" at the windows open for each program




Other functionality of the start menu where you have direct access to the last files you worked on the program in question





New drag and drop functionalities to help us use 2 windows and dividing the screen in half for each windows by dragging near the sides of the screen (as shown here), or to expand in full view while dragging the window near to top part of your screen

The new taskbar stuff looks really nice, I have to take a peek. I am still using Windows XP because I deeply hate Vista. XP is like the best OS ever.
I will have to move to 7 though, mainly for the 64bit edition as I am using enormous amounts of RAM in my work. Nice presentation btw.

Unless you compare it too OSX ;). And speaking strictly about Windows software I still think Windows NT/2000 is their best OS yet.

Anyway, I would upgrade to 7 if not my laptop sucked to begin with, hardwarewise. Now it's gotten some kind of mechanical glitch that makes it freeze if you move it around too much. Kinda takes away the point of a laptop...

OTOH - it's still Windows :D

But if you are happy it's all that matters flipper!:)

Maybe it's still Windows, there are still flaws, I know.

But, it is more stable than any other windows OS and has the most functionalities. Cannot ask for more really. Stability is a big issue for me because I have a lot of scripted programs done by not at all professionnal and they made my PC crash a lot, but now, they work perfectly :d.

OSX is good, even great for most people, but it has many disadvantages that many people won't say. It has MANY compatibility issues with hardware and is VERY limited when it comes to personnal customization like the scripted things I'm talking about.

I haven't touched OSX but I am sure 100% I 'd be really pissed about the lack of customization. Not that XP is all that customizable, but I am sure Apple thinks I should do some things they way THEY think it's best for me to do. XP is simple and sensible enough. I used to tinker with Linux for its complete customization possibilities, but now it's XP for me. As for stability, they are extremely stable... And best of all, they run super fast with today's hardware that runs Vista just at an acceptable speed. What kind of scripts are you running flipper?

There is no need to customize OSX because it is as good as complete out of the box.

Not for the things I want to do. With OSX, if I want to mod the ♣♣♣♣ out of a program, I can't. If I want to create programs, I can't. If I want to create some scripted stuff to launch some things when that happens on another program, I can't. I love customizing stuff, and OSX just won't let me do that kind of things.

I don't say OSX isn't great, it's just not as flexible as Windows. Accept it, just like I accepted Mac OS are usually more stable than anything windows ever put out and more risk free.

Also, one thing about OSX that is similar with Vista: most of the time, people only repeat stuff they hear. Vista wasn't all THAT bad people were saying. Heck, it worked great on my laptop. But people were continuing saying it was ♣♣♣♣ and unusable which is totally not true. In a similar way, people just repeat that OSX is so great and stuff, but I've used it, I know people studying informatics in University and they all of them say that OSX is great, but far from being as perfect as Mac user say. Like I said, incompatibilities, lack of customisability, and of course, way overpriced are the main issues.

Oh, and some of my friends have a Mac, and I used them a lot to see what the fuss was all about. My conclusions, were the previous. For MOST of the people, it might be the best OS out there. But, for people like me, for organizations, for labs, Windows is and surely will stay superior.

Yeah well my Windows Vista laptop is the worst piece of ♣♣♣♣ I've ever used. After using Macs for two years at school I get so frustrated that I wanna throw my laptop out of the Window(s). Instead of working for me I am the one working to make it function properly, which it still doesn't do...
 
When I need to play, I use 7 x64 (been using it since January, not a single BSOD or anything like that to complain about). For the rest, Linux x64. Don't see the interest of OSX, unless it's "look at me, I'm using OSX 8:"...

XP is outdated nowadays. Vista is ok now, but since 7 is here, its days are counted.
 
Every PC is a PC, even a Mac, despite Apple's bull****.

That's the thing, I'm nowhere close to a computer nerd, I don't know jack ♣♣♣♣ about them...that's why it's so frustrating when even a simple thing like trying to change the wallpaper or access the Control Panel makes the system go bananas. I just want a computer that works without me having to do hundreds of security updates every week, without getting loads of programs i don't need and just slows the computer down.

I don't know anything about coding, don't use any kind of advanced programs and still it works like ♣♣♣♣...

That's why I want a Mac, but right now I can't afford one.
