why does it cost to downgrade?

i decided i may want passive pickups, but it costs more to do that. why? thats crazy!
 
It simply has to get out of the std production line. You pay for it to get special attention, that's all.
 
And passive pickups is not a downgrade from active... just a different flavor...
 
Yes, Jan is right! Why do people think that passive is less good than active?? This is only a matter of tastes... And I confirm the answer from flipper_gv, it costs extra time and money for us to mount other pickups than the standard ones and therefore this fake "downgrade" costs money for the customer.

I almost want to say that active pickups are a downgrade, but obviously they cost more due to the circuitry added in.

But I always use this analogy when it comes to well-made pickups: Passives are like analog effects - natural, vintage tone. Actives are like digital effects - broader range of tweaked enhancement, but the natural/vintage tone is colored. I like both options for different projects. It's also a matter of personal taste/preference, so really, one is not better than the other...

And as Gregory said, the cost comes due to the labor of having to personally swap the pickups out...
