what y'all think: back up for my thumb nt5 (mm stingray)

hey folks

i'm really into 5-strings since i got my thumb nt5. i use it as my main bass and searching since then for a backup 5 stringer cos i will give some gigs next year...
it's hard to find another 5string wick for a cheap price (found this thumb for bout 650euros)
now a friend offered me a musicman bass as backup for the first gig in december and is also willing to sell it:

facts:
- music man stingray 5 (made in san luis obispo california, usa) bout ten years old
- body: ash
- neck: birdseye maple
- fretboard: rosewood
- active 3-band preamp and humbucking with 3way switching
i know this bass has other specifications then a thumb. but this bass sounds good too and i like it as well.
my question is: what do you think bout the price? my friend is offering it to me for bout 600euros... good price or should i get a sleep first?

I really like MM Stingrays! I think it's a fair price because if it's in good condition, it's passed the test of time for a MM. This is why I like a bass with a little age on it (of any brand) because if it's still good after 10 years, it will probably last 10 more. My experience with MM's is that you either get a good one or a bad one. Get it if you like it! :wink:

I've never had a 'bad' MM. I've got 8 on hand right now
and have only ever parted with one, which was a Leo
era bass. It was extremely beat up when I got it but it
was functionally still intact. I happen to prefer the tone
of the EBMM basses [post Leo era].

The price you have been offered is typical USA retail
for a USED bass such as you are considering. Friend-
to-friend in the USA would be lower. Knowing that USA
basses cost more in Europe, I'd say you're very likely
looking at a fine deal on a friend-to-friend basis.

I understand that MM basses are less common outside
the US, so you also have a great window of opportunity,
and I'd recommend you act upon it. Here in the US, you
can't hardly swing a dead geetard with banging into an
EBMM bass, or several. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` :-)

I guess the big caveat is that you gotta be comfortable
with a very typical artifact of American culture, which is
to say it's "Crude But Effective". Design-wise it's crude.
The execution is not. Build quality is 100% top shelf.

Also, the response you experience using the 3-band EQ
reinforces the " .... but effective" side of it's personality.
IOW response is huge and kinda sudden as soon as you
dial 2mm away from the center detent, and you've still
got the remainder of the 1/2turn in either direction just
daring you to go there.

BTW, prior to 2008, the 5-string StingRay was not really
a StingRay, but was actually a Sterling. Everything that
set the Sterling-4 apart from the StingRay-4 are present
in the StingRay-5 [until this year .... ] A Sterling is even
more in-you-face than a Ray.

I do have to accept that they are shaped like a toilet seat but I like their sound. I aree with Golem about the price since used ones range here in the $1000 mark but this being in Europe adding shipping costs and stuff I think is a fair price. Also it comes from a friend so you know he is not trying to rip you off for a defective bass and this is a good deal.

I would go for it.

I love their sound because I like the CDs from Hillsong Church and Hillsong United and they play EBMM strictkly and sound sooo nice.

get it! 600 euros is a very good second-hand price in Europe, and finding a birdseye-necked Stingray 5 is sometimes not easy here as well. If you don't like it, I'll buy it from you for the same price...;)

Where do you live in Switzerland? I'll be there in a few days...
 
considering that I've heard EBMM sell for near 2500 USD in Europe, well it's a very good deal. Better than one you'd get from someone in the USA with the shipping costs.

you're all right it's a good price!
i've checked ebay, ricardo etc... in switzerland and you don't get them for under 1000euros for 4 stringers!
germany is based on bout 1500 euros for mostly 4stringers

and sorry martin he is only willing to sell the bass to me with this price at the moment.
so when there aren't any 5strings wick offers till december, i think i would get it. gotta save up some money first.
 
Musicman stingrays are wonderfull instruments and for that price it's a steal!I would definately buy it!And I would definately use it along with my thumb and not only as a back up bass!

This bass is said to be 10 yrs old, approx a 1998 bass.
EBMM, somewhat appologetically, admits that around
2000 or 2001 birdseye necks pretty much disappeared
from the line due to escalating cost of birdseye maple.

I think if you like it, you should get it,
you seems to be getting a good deal,
and you know how that bass had been treated.

But personally, I cannot get over the "crude" part of the equation...
EBs are not what I consider pleasing to the eyes or comfortable ... :lol:
 
i sold a stingray before... i plan to buy another one in the future.

i realized i missed playing a stingray when i jammed on a crappy imitation one 2 days ago.

go get it! stingrays are just darn good basses!
 
i will still look around for a 5string wick till december. i've even chatted yesterday with slotter24 for the white thumb but unfortunaly i can't come up with the price.
i'm still lookin forwards for any 5string wick.
when the concert is done on december and i still didn't found any wick i will go for the mm cos i will get some cash that night and will sell the corvette as well (deal is done) so i only have to pay 200euros for that bass.
biggest problem is the cash at the moment because i will be jobless from december on :?
