Warwick string feedback needed...

Hey guys,

I've been in the studio all weekend, laying bass tracks for my bands upcomming EP. I've been using red labels on my Corvette, and boy they have ripped my fingers to shreds. Our producer couldn't beleive how razor sharp they were, and he's a seasoned bassist. The other issue is how quickly they go dead and loose sustain. Its happening within about an hour of constant playing. So I'm going thru 2 sets per song....kinda ridiculous isn't it.

My question is, due to not wanting to get the intonation tweaked as it is studio worthy spot on, would the same gauge black labels last any longer or should I expect the same life from them?? And are they any softer on the fingers??
 
Mmm i might have to try them...whats holding me back is

1. I get Warwick strings for free...
and
2. My bass is 100% intonated for the Warwick strings and due to wanting to get a consistent tone/sound etc we'd prefer not to muck with its set up if at all possible until im done tracking the basslines...
 
well, get yellow labels... they are nickel hence not as rough on your fingers.

you got tired of red labels after an hour? wow... those things lasted me for 3 months *lol*

if you get warwick strings for free... man, you are really lucky.

and regarding your bass being intonated for warwicks... i change brands and strings all the time... the only time i really need to reset up my bass is when i change from light gauge to heavy gauges... i dont think you'd need to intonate your wick just because you used DRs on them. and even if you need to intonate them, its very easy ... my guitarist does it for fun... goes to this gig and intonates every guitar he sees *lol*
 
I tried a lot of strings.
Red Labels suck hard... shame for Warwick, but they are really really bad strings. They sounded good with me for about 1 week of "not much" playing. But they really rip your fingers and die faster than a horde of lemmings during a visit to Grand Canyon.

Black Labels are a totaly other thing, though. They are really good. Smoother to the fingers and sound fine.

EMPs are the best. Sound like BL but last incredibly long. Mine now for over 1/2 year and i played pretty much the last weeks.
 
I like DRs, and no knock on them, but I prefer either Black Label or if you want nickel, Yellow Label. And if you want the smoothest, longest lasting and still get the tone and "feel" of the Black Label, nothin' beats the EMPs!
 
+1 for EMPs. The strings on my Thumb are over 6 months old now, and are ready for renewal. The stings on my $$ are about 4 months old and still OK!
 
I liked DR fatbeams, but the G string snapped after a week when I was slapping and popping -.-

So back to my black labels, think I'll go buy a set of EMPs when my black labels die.
 
just strung my wick with EMPs and i have to say they're bloody fantastic!
 
Yeah, i'm afraid red labels are pretty poor - yellow (nickel) black & emp strings are much better though!
 
I've used the Red Labels once and hated them. I have also tried EMPs and though they sounded fine, I didn't like the feel of them, so I stick to Black Labels - lovely feel and sound IMO.

Try the Blacks or EMP's Jono.They'll last longer but you'll have to re-intonate your basses.Good luck mate & I cant wait to hear the EP. :)
 
i get a month out of any set of strings...just saying, EMP's are cool, i wanna try some DR Xtra life
 
Michael's gonna do me a good price on some EMPs, so I'm gonna give them a shot. Hopefully in the same guage I won't need to fiddle too much with the intonation. Cheers for the advice guys!!

Yeh it does sound hardcore using them up in an hour, but I guess I was putting them under pretty intense usage in the studio. They just sounded tired and flat really quickly...no doubt due to the amount of skin I was leaving behind on them due to their roughness...my finger I was using for slide is literally bleeding!!

I've got a few of sets of Red labels for free for doing a little bit of forum admin stuff for the aussie forum.

I'll give the EMPs a shot and see how they go!!

ouch man! that really hurts! ... you must play really hard!

as for me, the most that i get is a blister on a blister of my middle finger from learning double pop ... currently though (after two weeks) my skin got tougher in that part so i dont get blisters anymore ... the thing is, i still cant do the technique right *lol*

goodl uck on your recording, and tell me how it goes with the EMP ... i have yet to try that... currently im using nickel rotosound .45's-105's on my darklord ... there are still new so its expected to be good. the real test comes a month after.
