warwick strap lock - am i stupid?

Push on the 'release button' while inserting the strap lock, then the bearings should lock in place when you release pressure. Make sure it is locked in place. Sometimes it's necessary to spray a little WD-40 on the bearings if they aren't releasing smoothly...

Now you should have just added a second post, I'd have some idea what the thread wuz abaht AND it increases your post count mate. It's called post whoring, but it's alright, everybody does it.
