Warwick Pro Fet 5.1 - Some help needed :)

Hey Warwick crew!

I only discovered this forum today after googling for info for my amp after it stopped working lastnite at band prac. Looks like ive got a bit of decent reading ahead of me now 8)


Anyway - i need some help and advice.

Lastnight my sound just cut straight out during a song, and im not entirely sure whats up yet.

to start - my rig is

Warwick Pro Fet 5.1 head
4x10" warwick neo pro cab
1x15" neodean cab.

There was no loud noises which i imadgine you would get with blowing a speaker (i cant imagine that i could blow TWO speakers too...)

I checked my bass through Guitarists amp in low volume and thats working fine, so ive come to the conclusion at the moment that something is wrong wiht the amp head.


When plugging direct in and turning the volume up i can see its picking up me playing as the red clip light comes on, but nothing was coming out of the speakers.

I always adjust the volume and gain so that i am not even cliping on the lows...general no clipping at all.


Would a fuse have blown? I have no knowledge or experience of this, have no idea where they are in the amp, and if its something i can check and fix myself.

Any advice or suggestions will help me out heaps.

Welcome to the forum man! One thing is sure, the cabinets are underpowered, I suggest you to buy another head soon if you want to keep the cabinets.
It sounds like a blown fuse, open the amp, and check them, and replace them with fuses with the same value.
Tell us what you find, please :-)
 
Underpowering cabs should not be a problem... Running the head too hard and into clipping though could be...
 
Hey cool - thanks for responding

The main repair place we have in Auckland charge $45 just to send your head away to be looked at/for a quote so if it is fuses, f*** paying that much ha ha!!

Ok, so i found the fuse on the back panel of the unit, under the mains plug. Pulled it out and had a look....the wire going across seems in tact??

And if im correct...if this particular fuse blew wouldnt that stop the amp from powering up alltogether??


Are there other fuses on a Warwick Pro FET 5.1? If so, where? Anyone? :)



Im not sure what else i can look at before taking it in and paying for it to be looked at/fixed.

Its quite frustrating as it is powering up, the fan goes on, lights all working, seems to be good as usual...but just NO sound is coming out :cry:



And as for my 2 cabs - they are both 8ohm and i was down with the understanding that the P.F.5.1 ran to capacity at 500w at 4ohms...so i would be doing it right.




Anyway, again, anyones comments and guidance is hugely appriciated. I have much to learn.

Hey Ami, if you remove the top panel, you'll see more fuses inside.
If you have power but no signal, it means the final stage fuse/fuses are blown. If that's the case, check the speaker cables too, probably you have a shortcircuit. Also something with the mute button could be damaged too, or a protection. Have you tried to play it after that?
 
I've had my sound cut off in a way pretty similar to the one described by you(no BANG!) once. It was a faulty cable between the head and the cab. I since bought myself a nice VOVOX cable for that purpose only...

I hope your problem is this simple!
 
Same issue

Just bought a new 5.1 and same thing happened.

Turned amp on and no sound though inputs were all working , clip lighting etc and headphone output fine but no sound to speakers.

The fan kep t clicking on and off though and after about 20 minutes it began to work after switching mains on and off and worked Ok then for rest of evening. Turned it on this morning and same thing but no sound as yet

Welcome to the forum Mikey,

You have to send it back to have it replaced. Sorry man for the trouble!
 
So theres no quick fix?

The fan is meant to cut in and out but its on all the time so something must be overheating


it was the last one in the shop (sure it was a demo model) so I guess Im going to have to go without for a while !!
 
Result !

The dealer agreed it was a fault and have arranged to collect it immeadiately from me and also arranged a replacement be sent direct from Warwick Headquarters.

Woah mama! Yeah after reading about capacators, and how touching one can really KILL YOU (!!!) i decided not to open it up.

It seriously would look like a scrambled jig saw puzzle in there to me anyway heheeheh.

But thanks for all the tips and help, whilst i havnt been able to do anything myself its always good to see what it could be when this happens.

I found a decent repair place and it should be fixed by Thurs so ill let you guys know what it was.

Just an update if you guys were interested

got a call from the repair guy. He said the cab has a blown output stage...could have been caused by the speaker cable (??), but it needs definetly 3, and up to 9 transistors replaced...

its going to roughly cost between 300 and 500 dollar to fix (depending on how many transistors need replacing)

So..naturally im not a happy camper :(

I wouldnt bother fixing it.You could buy another Profet for the price of the repair.Did you buy it new? If so,it might be still under warranty.

Yeah, could be the speaker cable... But 300 500 dollars? This is just too much if you ask me...
About the capacitors it is true. You can avoid an accident by doing this: After you unplug the amp from the mains power, you start the power. You see that the control lamp will glow for a few seconds. When the lamp is off, the capacitors are drained.

Not surprised your not a happy camper, was it new? if so I am sure Warwick would help out here. If it were me I would send it back to Warwick/dealer from were you purchased, for a full explanation on what happened. Have you checked the leads you were using at thwe time?

Heya,

Yeah naturally that was the first thing i thought of, so i had a look around before calling him back to say 'go ahead and fix it!'

A am talking in New Zealand dollars though! So thats probally why you guys are like..what the hell! Get a new one!

The head cost $1200 NZD new, so it is actually cheaper for me to have it fixed than buy a new one :(

Both speaker cables that i was usuing were high quality.. paid for better quality than the cheaper ones out there....

I wont be able to find a new head around 500w for under $500 anway so going with this, i know they had to order a couple of parts from aussie and their charge per hour is $80... so thats why so expensive..

i kinda have little other options though :cry:


Allready missed 2 band practices.... organised to borrow a peavy head for this monday...so i will have the fun task of finding out if either of my cabs are kaput too..

Oh and to answer your other questions... i bought it brand new about a two and a half years ago.... so the warany is about a year and a half over.

Bummer.
 
Haha, ok..New Zealand Dollars wasn't the first thing on my mind either. Then the costs are still high, but it's not as high as most people thought I guess :lol:
