Having sold my thumb neck thru6 (too heavy and neck dive hard to live with) I'm finding myself buying another.

It might sound a little odd but I don't know that much about the bass. It's a passive fretless Streamer Standard 5 and I think that the fretboard is ebony.

I believe it to be in good condition and I'm paying £325 for it delivered.

Anyway, here it is:



Any further information would be gratefully appreciated. What sort of strings would be recommended, flats?

It looks like a Badass bridge, surely not?

It is a warwick 1 peice bridge, similar to what they now use on the Rockbass line.

Flatwounds will sound great on that bass!!
 
Cool Bass! It won't sound anything like your old thumb (not necessarily good vs bad...just way different...less aggressive), but for the money, it's a great bass. That one looks to be in great shape, too. I'd for sure go with flats.

Also, is that Carolena? Does it really looks that nice under the stain? If so, I might make removing the stain and refinishing (my streamer 4 std) my next project.
 
What a fine looking Streamer Standard. Congrats.
String it with a set of Thomastik JF 345 flat wounds, and as its pickups are a little on the weaker side, maybe consider adding a Aguilar OBP-3 preamp. (with the midpot fixed at 600Hz (fretless bass loves 600Hz)).

The Aguilar OBP-3 preamp seems like a good idea. I may be asking for some more specific advice on that.

Hi Peter!

If the fretboard is ebony (which it looks like), you could use roundwound strings. I've used flatwounds on fretless - Thomastik are excellent... also d'Addario Chromes which are great value. But I decided I needed roundwounds for the tone I wanted... currently d'Addario nickel roundwounds, but I'm thinking of trying out coated strings... Elixirs and/or Warwick EMPs. Depends on what type of music you play and what tone you want.

I would also consider an off-board pre-amp, such as an EBS microbass 2 or a Sansamp, then you can run any bass into it. I have an EBS and I now keep my (active) bass eq flat, run it into an amp (with flat eq) as a monitor, and also as a DI box into the PA... and it's the tone I've always wanted!
 
I really appreciate the advice. Thinking along the outboard preamp lines I have an early John East outboard preamp called a Zing Pre-01.

3 band EQ specs are:

Low Boost only switchable 50Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz 20dB

Mid Boost and cut variable frequency 150Hz - 2.5 kHz +/- 20dB

High Boost 20dB @ 5kHz and cut - 20db @ 1k5Hz

There's also Pre-shape settings of:

Contour: +8dB @ 70Hz, +8dB 2-10 kHz

2 Brightness settings: +10dB @ 5kHz, +10dB @ 10kHz

Think it'll be useful?

As much as I'm okay with modding the bass I'd rather use what I've got if it'll do the job as well.

Hopefully I'll have the bass a week on Monday and I'll report back then.

Hmm, roundwounds or groundwounds? I suppose I want the Mwah if it's there

I finally got my Fretless home yesterday. D'addario Nickel rounds + Ebony board + Mid heavy Eden Cab = Heaven. I am and wouldnt have any problems running rounds on an Ebony board.. its a dense enough wood to take years of punishment from Rounds :lol:

If you do go Flats... Thomastiks have to be the best Ive used so far. Be great on a Fretless.
 
Peter... that East pre-amp sounds pretty versatile to me... give it a try out. Very easy to get confused by all the options though - you need to be patient and have plenty of time. Then you get an ideal tone at home and it just doesn't cut it in a band mix at all!

I tend to try out one frequency band at a time, then overdo it... so you know exactly what effect it has, then pull it back! And remember, sometimes it's better to cut than boost!
 
That's a great looking Streamer.

I've been using the D'Addario XL Chrome flatwounds on my fretless bass only because the Thomastiks are impossible to find in my area. I know someone who uses them and says the tension of the Thomastiks is far less than the other flatwounds out there. So maybe I'll break down and order some from the internet.

Anyone out there have a good online source for Thimastik flats?
