'Vette with Thumb pickup positioning?

The intro story: I'm thinking of buying a Corvette Bubinga as a backup for my Thumb BO. As far as I can see from specs, they're close up to a point (same neck wood, pickups, body wood of the same family, both BOs); however, I know they don't sound alike...thus, the question: how about a 'Vette with a different pickup positioning - similar to the Thumb's: J/J with the bridge pickup angled? Would that make the bass sound more like a Thumb? Were such basses produced until now? And would the CS accept such a request? My idea is to obtain a fairly similar sounding bass, but with the improved balancing of the Corvette - does this sound like a valid idea to you? :lol:
 
yes the CS will let you do altered pick up positioning. I think the price might be higher than getting a Thumb but you can always try and get a price quote ;)
 
The price will not be higher than the thumb, and the result will be very similar, as bubinga is very similar to ovankol...
Go for it :-)
 
yup, good idea... the only thing you're giving up is the thumb's small contoured body...

First of all, thanks for the feedback! :) Second: like I said, I already have a Thumb and although I love it, its special balance tends to bug me at times because so I'm trying to find a way to get a similar sounding bass but with better balance so I'd be able to strap the bass lower (as I like) and keep the neck in a more pronounced angle. The thing with the Thumb (at least with the 4ers) is that you can really feel the weight of that heavy neck and since the body is so small, it feels more like a beefy neck with a little "thingie" attached, rather than a regular sturdy bass :)

OK, so the CS offers freedom of PU location
PU config, and any body type can be of any
wood in the Wick catalog. Now, about your

the CS will allow you to order discontinued
body styles ? ? ?

If thaz true, the ultimate in balance for us
players of high neck angles would hafta be
the Fortress [do I hear an 'amen' ?]

You're prolly right, but on one hand I don't like the Fortress design that much, and second...last time I've checked, the additional fee for a discontinued body model was around 800 Euros - which is about how much I was planning to spend on the 'Vette (before getting this crazy idea); for the moment I can't afford a second Thumb (BO even), let alone a more expensive bass...sad, but true. Hmmmzzz....we'll see...anyway, tnx again for the suggestions, guys! ;)
 
Not to steal the thread, but has anyone ever seen/heard a Thumb NT with a wenge fretboard? To my ears the NT sounds so 'clanky'... so for some reason I'm curious if it's having frets on an ebony board that my ears don't like... Anyone?
 
Yes, I owned two of them, and tried the ebony fb ones.
None of them are clanky in the mix. To me, "clanky" means soem high nasal mids. Like the SSII maybe. Thumbs are low positioned in the mix, they kick in your stomach, they have punchy lows, and some treble.

I prefer the wenge boarded Thumb NT's too.It just sounds a little warmer & less bright & less hifi to me.
