I got a call from my old band teacher today, and she said that she would give me GIVE ME her upright bass. The only catch is that I have to do a performance for her, tomorrow, but it is well worth it. javascript:emoticon(':D')

Give you to use for the performance or to keep?

If to keep, you lucky .... She can call me if she ever needs a bass player

Good luck with the performance, and good luck with the bass.

Oh, and welcome to the forum

for me to keep, I'm gonna use my warwick for the show, and thanks for the welcome, everyone seems very "family like here"

if only i had a dime for everytime i perform... i could buy a can of coke now *lol*

welcome ampegsvt4

Oh what kind of Warwick do you own?

corvette std fretless, i just brought home my stand up, my fingers are already hurting, much more of a work out, then normal bass.

upright bass IS normal bass! It was the instrument that started this crazy madness that we call the lowend! ;)

i should've said electric bass, but my fingers are killing me, especially my left hand, so I took a break for the night, I didn't want to get injured, can anyone help me out here? On how to fix this.

Wow - great work ampegsvt4!

That's great news that you scored an upright.

I don't have any upright specific guidance to offer you, except to say I think you should take care and do some stretchin and good warmups before you play it, and get some good advice on technique to ensure you're not creating any bad (or potentially harmful) habits.

:D

I'd love to see a pic of your new upright too!

practice. set your electric action a little higher. i started on upright, so its not that big of a deal for me. the good thing about it is i'm not to picky about my action on electrics :D. do take it easy though, you don't want to get carpel tunnel!

actually, please post picks or videos of you playing. i can help you out on technique...

Be careful when attempting to master
the technique of laying it on it's corner,
and standing in the cut out.

:D

It can be tricky, and you may fall. :P

Congrats man, color me jealous.

hah, I think i've got the spin down, but heres a link to the bass

Its a great sounding bass, and can anyone tell me what gut strings are?

As far as rocka/psycho billy goes.

I'm a HUGE Tiger Army and Horrorpops fan.

Not to mention my buddies band, The Downshifters.

I'm looking for some super dry sounding bass strings, old 1920's ragtime type of sound, if anyone could help me out that would be great.

*and thank you for the help, you have all been great.

A "performance" is the "only" catch?
That's not much of a catch.
Good luck.

Sorry bud, not sure what to tell
you there.

I've always been more of a
weed eater strings kind of double
slapper. :D

yah I know, 25 dollars, and 1 performance, I get a hand made 3/4 upright bass, made in italy!! Today was great, I had a lot of fun at my concert band performance, we played, pirates of the Caribbean, phantom of the opera, Aladdin, some parts of phantom of the opera was quite challenging, especially the change from 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 6/16, 3/2, those changed every two measures for one part. i just played quarter notes through those I couldn't even bring my self to count it.

Well I love both, I do jazz, and I love slap, so i need a hybrid, hmm, but at 100 or so dollars a pop, its hard.

Mate, I have the same bass and use the purple tipped spirocores on it. They are a slightly lighter gauge and help you out a lot when learning.

Keep your right hand fingers pointing downward, your left hand spread. They say not to use your 3rd finger, but unless your playing clasical all the time ignore that rule, they also say to keep your left elbow upright, but 95% of the double players i know dont do that. Make sure you set the bass at the right height as well. The "E" string tuner peg should be at your ear height.

Apart from that, just keep the practice up. It will hurt at first, but once you get used to the longer scale, and the standing position, it will get a lot easier.

I hope that helps a bit.

Talkbass also has a great double bass forum, but they can be a bit stuffy if you know what i mean.!

Cheers

Rusty
