Hi there,anyone has had any problem with the neck on their bass having a crack behind the fretboard when you adjust the truss rod the wood at the back just bows out.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
 
Hey mate,can ya post some pics please?I dont have the foggiest idea what ya mean.Maybe this is a raised seam.But lets see it first eh. :wink:
 
Did you get it used? Or has it been dropped or been exposed to extreme heat or cold recently?
 
Hi Guys,
I bought the bass used,i'll try to post some pics,tonight,the fretboard is fine,it has'nt separated from the neck,the crack is going from top to bottom along with the grain of the wood,its just behind the truss rod,I tried using titebond III to glue it back left it for 24 hrs.without any success,any other types of glue suggestions??

Yeah that's the problem with used instruments.

'I took real good care of it, it was my baby' but the seller will neglect to mention that it fell out of the back of his car once. Or that he used it to kill a cockroach once (did that with my Ibanez, still sounds+plays great though).

You never know what dark history it might have. Plus, that's an issue with neckthrough instruments... with a bolt-on, if the neck gets screwed up real bad you can always just take it off and order a new one. With an NT, that's that...

Probably the best course of action is take it to a Warwick specialist.
 
All this advice is great,but we havent established if the neck is actually cracked or it's a raised seam that just needs sanding.I mean,it's a bit of a stretch to diagnose the problem without seeing it.
 
It's actually not a raised seam,cause the piece thats cracked actually lifts when I adjust the truss rod,I'll try to get some pics,but what I need to know if anyone else know ,what type of glue should I use,I've tried titebond III without any success
 
I'd recommend cooking up a batch of hide glue. Hide glue comes in dry pellets and is immersed in water and simmered in a double boiler until liquid. Work it into the crack and clamp it as best as you can. You might need to loosen the neck rod to relax the split wood. You have to work pretty quickly because hide glue dries fast unless you make a 'wet' batch (extra water).

I've used a hypodermic before to get glue in the crack.

There is a concern that the other glue may have sealed the wood surface.

At any rate, a luthier could fix this if there's one available.

That looks kinda scary. Verify for us that in picture #2 that it's actually wood visible inside the crack. Is it possible that we're looking at the truss rod coming out?

that's what i thought...it looks like the trussrod is bent like a m**********r.... :shock:
 
It looks like possibly it's a push-pull truss rod that got pushed too hard. I don't know how else it could have got bent in that spot.

How in da vak did that happen ?? Is the wood rotten or something ?? :shock: You can't show that picture here man............kids are watching too ya know................ :x
 
So the crack increases in size as you take tension out of the truss rod?Have I got that right?It doesnt look good from the pics,this fix is probably best left to a luthier.
On another note,I'm wondering if this is the reason they now carve a volute behind the nut.
 
also...what kind of nut is that? it doesnt look like a JAN-2, and it's not a brass JAN-1 for sure..

it looks like some kind of plastic material between the cracked piece and the truss rod,is there anyway to remove the truss rod easily
 
Bought the bass second hand,not sure what the previous owner did to the nut,I'm trying to get a replacement,with no success here in canada
