Thumb bo 5 vs nt 6

I was wondering if any of you guy's would know if there would be much difference in tone between a 5 string bolt thumb & an 89 through neck 6 string thumb with bartolini's & mec 2band, i've head the 5 string & loved the tone but i'm about to buy the 6 string

Hey Dodger, welcome to the forum !
They have in common that specific thumb growl, they sit in the mix pretty much in the same are.
The BO5 is like a mad dog. Very growly and articulated, but in a dry way.
The NT 6, is darker, softer, and rounder. Its sound has some extra body, and juice, but softer than the BO 5.
Check the forum for Jeroen Thesseling's sound clips with thumb NT 6, you can have a very good Idea.

Thanks for that, i got the bass yesterday & coudn't be happier, it sounds awsome. It's quite heavey but i don't mind that, i use to play wals & they were fairly weighty.
It's an 89 thumb but it looks brand new, the only thing i think i'll have to do is replace the jack socket as it's a bit tempremental & restring it.
i'll try & put some photo's up over the next couple of day's

I think The two basses have the same voice, both pickups on, bass & treble set flat gives that bernard edwards kind of sound but with more depth & clarity & slapping on the same settings is awsome with the d g & c strings having a real sweet tone almost a funky strat sound & the b e & a strings have a solid dry bark to them, very clear & punchy.
i absolutly love this bass
i'm gonna try & put some photo's on.
ok i tried but it say's the attachment is too big so i'll have to learn how to adjust the size :roll:

Well just to put my opinion in, I spent over a year with a beautiful used Thumb NT 5 from eBay and I loved it. Then I picked up a Thumb BO 5 from an acquaintance at one of my gigs and I truly fell in love. He couldn't get me to put it down.

I don't have enough money to have more than 1 expensive bass, so the first thing I did that weekend after I sobered up was put my Thumb NT 5 on eBay. Of course, it sold in no time (I got $1700 for it, paid $1300, so that was a nice bonus).

Then I bought a 2005, mint condition Thumb BO for $1200. (By the way, don't you LOVE those people who spend ungodly money on a bass and never play it? Let's us almost poor folk take it off their hands cheap. I mean, the gold lettering is still perfect and I have never seen that on a 2 year old used Warwick!)

So my point is, don't believe the NT hype. Believe your ear, not your wallet. If NT is the way to go, great! But for me, I could dial in a much brighter, crisper mid-range cut through than I ever could on my NT 5.

Maybe it was user error, but the NT 5 was always way more subdued. I found it a very reluctant bass, if you don't mind the personification. I had to really hammer on it to coax out the growling metal-mid thump that the BO gives me with a wink and a smile. That girl really loves me (or maybe she just loves me for my amp and pedal).

Good point, it's apples and oranges, I guess. A bass that sounds good to my ears sounds good whether it's a bolt-on or neck through.

It's always great to read stories like this.
If the extra mid range bark puts lead in yer pencil,the Thumb BO is definatly gonna float your boat.
If endless sustain & more refined red wine & cheese nibbling tone is your bag,the NT is the bass to hit.
