I challenge anyone to find a more agressive Streamer tone. Found this and loved it, plenty of swearing in it so dont watch if you are easily offended. Saw this tour in Adelaide and the pit was another planet, pure showmanship from these guys.

he uses an overdrive pedal in this video, which is obvious, but the tone is a killer nonetheless. i have to say that Slipknot kind of lost it's groove partially with Gray picking up the Ibanez basses. i really couldn't dig "All Hope is Gone", except for "Snuff". As for the early days, check out this Streamer tone, it's marvelous:

When I saw the video for "Duality" a long time ago, I was like "Where's the guy with the piano at the beginning?" I had no idea a bass could sound like that! From then, I had to look into this "Warwick" brand!
 
I have to disagree. This all sounds like crap, especially in the live clip.

This is the kind of tone that (IMO) gives Warwick a bad reputation.
 
IMO it does not sound like crap - IMO this suits the music very well.
BTW: Some people could be offended if they talk about a nice bass tone and someone pops in and says they are wrong, it sounds like crap. IMO, of course.
 
Ah I only have crappy laptop speakers so I can't really hear the bass in the live video. The tone in the actual recording is ok, but it doesn't blow me away.
 
I'm not saying they are wrong, I'm just saying I think it sounds like crap :D ;)

This is the kind of thing I hear from WW haters most of the time, that they sound like in these clips...

I saw Slipknot live at Perth's Big Day Out the same year as Augies post & once again at a much smaller venue in Sydney. Paul played a Thumb those entire shows, & the only time I could hear his bass was the few moments all the other instruments stopped. I think one of Slipknot's shortcomings music wise is there's just too many instruments & they can sometimes clog the mix. They come off better in studio recordings where an engineer has had more control over things, but live, they can become quite a wall of undefined noise.
The Mate,Feed,Kill,Repeat cd is pretty good as well as the self titled one. The ones after that found them running out of ideas IMHO. Bit like Mudvayne. The earlier stuff's alot more impressive than the later stuff. But then, that can describe just about any band from any genre, except of course, AC/DC ;)

I dig this kind of overdriven tone lots. Is this sound achieved with a tube preamp/poweramp? I go rigless and I am fairly oblivious to these things.
 
all i knew is that he uses both 6-string Thumb and a 6-string Corvette, and uses a BOSS ODB3 OverDrive pedal. but then i found this:

"I use an Ashdown EVO II 500 live and in the studio I'll use a number of heads, mainly an Ampeg SVT-CL or SVT-2, plus also Eden, Sunn and Aguilar gear, as well as my Ashdown of course. I use a boss bass equaliser (GEB-7) to reduce a bit of the low mids (160Hz) that are naturally produced from my Warwick Thumb-6, I also run an ODB-3 but I've just bought a Tech-21 XXL, which is a monster distortion, a bit differnt to the ODB-3, which is an overdrive. I also use a DD-20 boss delay and an OC-3 boss octave pedal for some parts of newer songs."
 
Low B just seams to be useless in very heavy settings. Especially if it's drop tuned to Low B. It's like bedroom eq'ing. It sounds great, but you can't hear it in a band setting.

I remember spit it out at Download 09 and I think I ended up sat on some ones knee, my girlfriend on my knee some one else on hers, it was so crowded for sitting down that we sort of fell over. Then it got scary as everyone junped and I just slipped and saw feet going up and down next to my head. Then I got picked up.

I don't really enjoy Slipknot that much on CD. Just isn't entirely my cup of tea. But live I love them.
 
I'm loving the Overdrive on the Simple Boy track. One of the best I've heard.

What's his secret?
 
Some doods on talkbass recon it was boss ODB-3 and tech 21 XXL, run through ampeg CL and/or SVT2 in the studio, the bass player uses ashdown live, and all sorts of heads in the studio as well. A shiny new donkey to the man who can tell me how to get that tone from an ODB-3!
 
Imho ya don't need an overdrive to get that sound from da Warwick low B...just crank up da amp as much as humanly possible and make it bleed da midzzz and earzzz ....8:
