Streamer Stage2 and pickups

okay, first post here...been playing bass about a year but now want to buy my own...im really digging warwicks, especially the streamer 2 5 string.

few questions about PUps tho...

1. what's difference between a soapbar and a J and a P?

3. is the spacing and location of the P/J combo the same as the location on a regular J or P?

finally, what's the cheapest anyone has seen a streamer stage 2, used is ok? i'm trying to fund several gear purchases at once.

EDIT: Browsing around, I've noticed the older streamers to be a little bit different than the newer ones in terms of woods used and hardware...Which ones are generally considered better? why? if it helps, which is the one the guy from incubus, dirk lance, uses?

okay i am gonna give it whirl..

as far as P-bass goes i personally think it has a "dry" sound compared to a J-bass style pick-up. i am not sure but i think a soapbar is the same as a J-bass just bigger (dont quote me because i am not sure on that one)


the cheapest streamer stage 2/5 i saw was 2199+ tax brand-new but that deal is long gone my room-mate bought it lol.


as far as spacing on pick-ups it all depends on the bass. the J-bass setup on the streamer stage 2 is the most comon J-bass setup most jazz basses have that exact same spacing. but then you have the thumb wich is very different. like i said it all depends on the bass.


as far as the whole older is better argument. i disagree i think that the newer ones sound better. but that is just me, i have played an older stramer stage 2 that had the wenge' neck and it did fell very nice but it basically sounded the a little flat to me.

The P has two elements, one for upper strings and one for lower, which are humcancelling.
Usually it's located near the neck, and had a full, round tone.

J pickups are single coils*, usually you have two J on a bass guitar (or a P + J, or a * + MM).
The sound is growlier less deep and ful than that of a P.
*active J's such as EMG, MEC gold.. are humbuckers.

Soapbars are humbuckers too, they're common on 5 or 6 strings instruments. Usually they're active,, cause yu need some pre eq. to get an even response from a multistrings bass.

3. is the spacing and location of the P/J combo the same as the location on a regular J or P?

It depends.
Pickup location usually is similar on different basses, but each manufacturer decide where to put the pickups, according to woods, sound they want to get...

Most people (like me) prefer older Warwicks, but other prefer the newer ones.
Usually the older models are somehow darker and growlier, while never ones are brighter.

I think that Dirk Lance uses 5 strings Stage 2 from the second half of the nineties. He has Basslines pickups on his basses.

i guess ultimately, after doing research at work, it comes down to the wenge ovangkol debate, which i'm sure has been covered 50000 times. you'll never know till you hear clips or you play 'em...speaking of which, clips are welcome!
