As usual I've been drooling over the Warwicks on ebay where there is an 2001 SS1 listed in America. Boy its a beauty! The seller is showing a picture of the electronics bay which got my attention as its completely different to mine ( SS1 2000). First my bass has two batteries (9v) and a larger circuit board.
So is this normal i.e. some do and some don't and that's that. Or has mine a retro fit pre-amp etc...etc... I have no idea on this subject (or any other  ) but i bet i will do soon!
BTW here's a link to the bass on ebay, again drool!

And I'm sorry if this has been explained before

It looks like the MEC 2 band preamp on that one. Does yours have an MEC preamp or some other type? ~M~

Don't know
I brought it second hand. Is there a way to tell?

Usually the MEC preamps will have "MEC" stamped on the back of the pots. The close-up of the electronics on the SS1 on ebay show this stamp. Also, there should be lettering on the pc board of your preamp with MEC BEC II or BEC III or some other designation if it's an MEC part. If yours isn't an MEC preamp, there should be some other mark on the board or pots to show who made it. :P ~M~

Yes your right there is MEC on the pots tho i cant see anything on the board. I've just read the ebay description and the bass has a two band EQ. My one has Bass Mid and Treb. I thought SS1s were pretty much all the same? How little i know! Do any Thumbs have an 18v EQ? I did notice that the SS1 has a lot more output than the Thumb.

You can find much better deals in Europe on Warwick Basses.

Look at this for example:

950 euro

Mine's a 99 SS1 (5 string), bought on ebay from the US. It has 2 9v batteries in it and a 3 stage eq. Not sure if the 4 strings are different as they don't have soapbar pickups.

whats the deal with the 2 band/ 3 band eq on the stage 1s, I always thought that older stage 1s (pre 95 or sumthing) had 2 band and new had three but there is a 2001 listed on ebay with a 2 band EQ???

I would be quite interested in comparing a Thumb with a 9v pre-amp, i.e mine and a vintage one with an 18v and see if the 18v has a bigger output and any other differences. Has anybody got both??

I would be VERY interested in this, too. But I've only got a SSII with 9V electronics, maybe someone switched his ones and wants to send me the 18V version??

Older Thumbs (if we can call them Vintage anyway..) have 9v 2 way electronics.
The 18v was introduced around mid nineties

My 18v SS1 has a much lower output than my 9v Thumb.

:)

Thats interesting because after playing both at home i can definitely say that the SS1 has a much bigger sound than the Thumb? :? ? Confusing...

The old 2 battery 18 volt preamp is the same as the new one other than it's designed to run on 1 instead of 2x9 volt batteries.
