For reasons unknown, that is the 'traditional' controls config
on many dual PU archtops. Whether the PU balance is via a
pan knob or dual volume knobs it makes no difference as to
how the balance control relates to the 3-way selector switch.
And yes, there's redundancy between the switch and knobs.
A kill-switch effect ? Same as turning the volume knob(s) to
zero. Solo the bridge or neck PU ? Player's choice, whether
to use the knob(s) or the 3-way switch.
A very rational explanation there Samuel, but I play these
things and have yet to find any benefit, except maybe for
being in a hurry. There's no automatic rebalancing effect if
you throw the 3-way. It's not like turning a pan knob all the
way to neck or bridge. It
IS like turning one of the volume
knobs on a dual volume knob config all the way to zero.
Remember, there is nothing magical about a pan knob. It's
just convenience. Under the knob are two volume pots so
it's same as linking a rubber band over a pair of dual knob
volume controls [if the rubber band makes a "figure-8"].

If there was ever a circuit that
had to have both a 3-way
and the dual volume knobs, it would be the one used by
Gibson, Guild, Fender Japan, and maybe others, where
the center position on the switch links the bridge and the
neck PUs in series wiring. It's kinda confusing to use it at
first, but there are some coool tones to be found in that
center positon, where whichever PU is set lower will also
act as an odd tone contol on the other one, even though
both PUs are still playing. But, turn
either PU to zero and
they'll
both go silent [series wiring, y'see ... ].
