Just out of curiosity:

Would replacing a stock speaker from a 75w combo amp with one that's rated for 100w give you more control over the volume coming out of your amp? What I mean is this, a 75w amp connected to a 75w speaker is pushing out 75w.... we all know that most combos can't reach their full capacity because the speakers start distorting. So what if you replaced that 75w with a 100w? Would you be able to appreciate the full power of the amp
or would you still have distortion problems due to the 25w difference.

All of this theory is taking into consideration amp ohms and speaker ohms and matching the one with the other.

Any ideas/ suggestions?
 
if the ohms match there shouldn't be big problems, but remember that combos usually designed for THEIR speaker. However if the speaker distorts, a higher watt speaker can help.
About volume: there will be no volume difference between a 75w and a 100w speaker with the same sensitivity if you push 75w through them. What matters here is sensitivity. A speaker with higher sensitivity will produce higher volume at the same watts.

Usually the amp distorts too, not just the speaker, so it is possible that you don't gain much with the change. 75 or 100 W is little power, anyway. I'd say that 250 W is a minimum requirement for bass guitar at rehearsals and small gigs.
 
Thanks fellas. The reason I was asking this is because I'm considering buying a new amp and I'm concerned with power plus the size.... I live in a condo and I'm looking at gigging with acoustic players in small venues (acoustic guitar, percussionist and bass). I can't crank up my amp obviously and I'm limited on space. I use to have a GK MB150 but sold it for my EBS Microbass II because I was never using the GK. I now find myself possibly gigging again and I've hit a wall about what to do. I have been looking at the Line 6 Studio110(75w), GK MB150(100w), SWR Baby Baby Blue(120W), or a PJB Briefcase(100w). Price is also an issue because I don't want to throw down too much for a combo. I'm limited on my choices here in Hawaii because most of the music stores only carry Crate or Behringer so this will have to be an internet purchase. I know there's alot of constraints but any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
 
Mate I'd go for the PJB Briefcase,I think Marcbass has one.He sold all his Warwick amps after trying one.
 
If you're lookin for a CHEAP combo that still has a good sound I'd recommend Ashdown stuff. The Baby Blue Series combos have never let me down in my years of playing small gigs... and of course the Sweet Series of Warwick. I dunno if the shipping would make it much more expensive though. maybe your dealer could order them for you for better conditions, concerning shipping, tax, etc...
 
I would go with the GK. Very light and great sound, also later you can updgrade it with another speaker if needed.
Also check out the Warwick take 12. 80w, but quite loud and has a tweeter. Also it's a very cheap model (about $250-300)

99 out of 100 it's the power amp section of the combo which clips, it aint' a speakers fault.

think of it this way. combos are cheap (usually). whats the most espensive section? The poweramp...so where are the manufactors going to try and save on the production costs...the poweramp.

its easy and cheap for the makers to find a speaker/driver that that can handle the poweramp
