some streamer stage 1 questions

i was thinking of possibly purchasing or trading my 5 string thumb nt for a 5 string ss1. i think the soapbar pickups will give the heavier music my band is moving to a very ballsy sound. however, the thing i'm sort of worried about is the broadneck factor. i've been playing warwicks for 5 years now and have always played on the standard necks. the new music will be alot faster and much more technically involved so i'm a little nervous about going to the wider string spacing. my question is, how hard is it to get used to the new spacing? is it really noticeable? all comments are welcome and appreciated. thanks!
 
have you ever played a warwick 4 strings? If yes, 4 stringers are 20mm at the bridge too.

Or, if you ever tried a fender 5 or a sadowsky 5, they both have wider string spacing than a warwick. If you didn't have problem playing with them, maybe just a little time will be needed to get used to the broader spacing
 
Flipper, 4 stringers have 19 mm at the bridge, but it is close enough :-) Most of the guys that are buying BN Warwicks are saying that it is better for fast licks.
You'll get used in no time anyway :-)

I don't have a BN 5 string, but going back and forth between a 5 and 4 stringer I think which is better for what kind of lick depends on the lick. I find for a Foxton type run, going down the strings, the tighter string spacing of the standard 5 makes this a lot faster and easier. But for a Smithereens type bass bridge (we did Blood and Roses) the wider spacing of the 4 is easier, I find myself getting lost on the really fast up and down string changes.

That being said I find I'm playing the songs a helluva lot faster than they should be playing on my own.
 
I've had both broad and narrow... and really you *should* be able to adjust easily
 
thanks for the advice. i didn't think it would be too much of a problem just take some getting used to. i still haven't decided if i want to get rid of my thumb though. i know the ss1 is really good for funk, but i was wondering your opinions on using it for heavier/technical music. again any and all comments are very welcome!
 
Switching from my 5-string $$ to my 4-string Thumb is no big deal at all. I feel the difference, but also adjust naturally to each bass without having to think about it.

The real question is whether or not the SS1 with soapbars will cut through a heavy mix the way the Thumb can...
 
It doesn't answer your question directly (as I am talking 4 string) but I have to say that when I switch from my Streamer that has 'normal' string spacing to my Dolphin which is considerably wider I actually find it easier in some ways to play the wider spacing!

I dare to disagree.
The Thumb has a more aggressive sound, and I think its cuts better through a heavy music mix
 
see i'm torn! i really love the distinctive sound of the thumb i just don't enjoy playing it as much. i always have to compete with neck dive while i'm playing it standing and it really doesn't sit on my lap to comfortably sitting. at first i just thought it was because i wasn't used to it, but i've had it for quite a while now and it's still sort of awkward to play. i bought a 3 1/2' wide levys strap and it still neck dives a great deal. again, i still can't decide whether or not to get rid of it, just because i love the sound so much. still can't really decide what to do.

That would be a custom order, I have a Bubinga SSII...



It is 'different' (not stating better) than an Afzealia model. You do have to remember that tone is very subjective and what one person describes as 'sweet top end' may be another persons 'fingernails down a chalk board' OR 'lifeless treble' :D

Thanks.

One of these days I'd like to get around to recording all of my basses under the same conditions and posting clips but TBH in order for it to have true value I'd need to string them all with the same gauge/make of strings and I'm not keen on buying 11 sets of strings for the fun of it... wonder if Warwick would endorse/supply them free in the best interests of the Forum :wink:
