some help please!

ok...just got my 1999 Warwick FNA JAzzman 5 string corvette... the bass is stunning! it is a beauty( i will post pics tomorrow probably or asap) the thing is it has a problem that i think many has had ( just guessing here) when i turn the high's all the way up i hear that annoying buzz and it gets worse if touch the magnetic dots (sorry for the pour description) on the pick-ups...so if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it...a lot...this is my first real warwick...up until now i've had 5 string rockbass cu active pick-ups...the difference is incredible! aside from that annoying buzz it is very versatile!
 
Could be a low battery. Otherwise, its possible for a bass of that age for the small wire coming off the input jack to the pot as a ground to have worked loss, resulting in more hum. I'd check that first, and maybe try sheilding the cavity with some shielding paint or copper - there will be some threads here on how to do that.

I'm hoping Luke (Eberbachl) will chime in here, he's the man to go (well, one of them at least!) to for such questions :)
 
well i changed the battery yesterday! the battery is new...i'll try shielding the cavity...thanx a lot guyz!
 
so this is the bass that i was talking about...i can't believe that i finally have one :d...

That's a good looking bass. I've tried it before and loved the tone, but somehow I fell in love with the set necks. Got myself a Dolphin and a Vampyre. Love them dearly. I know the feeling of finally owning a Warwick. Surreal isn't it? Don't think I'll use any other basses for a very long time.

About your pickup in question, when you boost the treble all the way up, it does tend to boost some signals picked up by it and it does sound kinda "dusty". Keep in mind that your pickups are passive. What I have in mine are active and the sound is really clean. There's quite a difference between active and passive pickups. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

Leviathan is right, the passive pickups are a little bit noisy, and raising the highs all the way up doesn't look like a good Idea to me :-) Maybe new strings with more zzzzing?
Anyway, it doesn't look right to me, the buzz should be lower when you touch the ground, so, I'd check the wires...
 
I have a bass like yours and i don't think that you need to boost the treble that much.
Start with the eq on the bass flat (on the center detents) and move from there, too much boost on any of the 3 band preamp ant the sound starts to get weird IMO.
 
well i don't usually play with the treble all the way up not even half way up... i like a deep fat tone...the thing is even if don't use the treble at all, i touch the coils it starts to buzz...on the jazz pickup if i touch the coils it starts to buzz kinda loud...the MM pickup does have a buzz but that's hardly noticeable...i' ve checked the wires but i just couldn't figure it out...:(
 
If your bass is buzzing so bad that it is intrusive then I don't think shielding the cavity is the answer. It will have left the factory with sufficient shielding and acceptable levels of 'noise' if this isn't the case now then it is a fault/problem, which if you can't identify, then it needs looking at by a professional; all of the wiring schematics are available on the Warwick site but if reading and understanding them isn't your thing then off to see someone who can. :d

well i thought of that at first then i realized that there is nobody here in my town that can fix something like this...the only thing there gonna say is " well something is wrong with it but we just can't figure it out what" and that much i know for myself...anyway i dunno what i'm gonna do...it's very disappointing really that i can't figure it out...:((

and thru a different amp ? Some buildings
and some amps just have noisy wiring but
not all bass designs are equally vulnerable.

shops ? Time to find the wiring diagram
and carefully rewire the WHOLE bass from
scratch. This is acually easier than partial
wiring cuz you can just remove everything.

I would also include new pots AND a tone
capacitor. The idea is to have minimized
the variables, cuz you might still have the
problem even after rewiring .... meaning
very likely one of the PU coils is noisy.

well that does sound like a good idea but i'm a bit worried about screwing up the rewiring...i've never done a rewiring before, so i'm not that confident...although it sounds simple enough i wouldn't do it..i'm just not sure...:|
 




Well then, back to your local shop.
They may not know what's wrong,
but surely they can read a diagram
and solder wires, pots, and caps ?

If there's only one shop in your town that sells electric guitars,then they'll have someone that can at least fix them.It sounds like you've already decided what answer you're going to get before you've even left the house.Have a little faith &/or confidence.Your town has computers yes?It cant be that provincial that there isnt a single person there that cant fix your bass,surely.Dont be too hard on yourself because you cant fix it.One component on the curcuit board might be the cause.Identifying which one isnt like locating a loose wire.You'll be alright ;)

Why did I ever say something like

I've had an FNA Jazzman, and it's not
passive and not really simple. Not like
'impossible', but not simple. I do NOT
know what I musta be thinkin ....

well i haven't played it trough any other amp or building... but i am waiting for my Line 6 LD300 PRO so i can really hear what this ax is capable of...i only tested it on my computer speakers...so it should be a pretty interesting difference...
