Some Advice / Guidance Please!

Hi everyone,

I'd like to ask some advice, please!

I am going to order an Infinity NT 5 string fretless through the custom shop but I'd like some advice about a couple of things, please?

Firstly, I'd like it in Nirvana Black, but unsure of whether to choose oil finish or high polish - will the polish affect the sound of the wood?

Secondly, I'm tempted by a piezo bridge and I know some of you have them - I've never had the opportunity of trying a bass with this bridge, but I guess it would sound beautiful on an Infinity blended with the magnetic pick ups?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

I don't think the finish will interfere with the sound, at all. Personally I'd go for the natural oil finish, I just love to see the bare wood. But that's me. :)
 
Thank you Benjamin! I love the bare wood too, and especially the feel of the neck being smooth.

But does the varnish from the high polish affect movement up and down the neck?

to me it does, it annoys the hell out of me, some people don't mind it do. go play a fender and get back to us...
 
The topic of whether high polish or oil finished basses sound different was discussed here:

The conclusion was that the majority thinks it is of no influence........Cheers man. :D
 
My Corvette has a natural oil neck, my squier has a hi-gloss neck. I definately preffer my corvettes neck, so much smoother. and just a thousand little things that are better with my oil neck. It's smoother, I also find my left hand to get a lot less sweaty and uncomfortable on the corvettes neck. I'd say go wood! =D
 
I asked myself the question of adding a piezo bridge to my custom infinity when i was about to place the order. It didn't make sense to have a piezo bridge in that bass so I never ordered it for my bass.
 
The glossy neck on my Fender Jazz Bass is far more difficult for me to move across then the neck on my Infinity SN. I feels like my hand get sticky when it sweats.
 
Despite what Ollie says, I'm going to recommend the piezo :D
 
The Infinity NT is a semi hollow body,does it even need a piezo?

The piezo will still give a different sound I believe

You will leave thumbmarks with color oil finish... And that will look cheap on the infinity. I'd chose High Gloss for your beauty :-)
Color oil finish it's not the bare wood anyway, it's some kind of satin finish.
 
Is the neck coloured oil too on the Infinity. Both my coloured oil basses are BO's, and the necks are natural oil.

Thanks so much for all of your replies and information! I think I'm going to give the piezo bridge a miss this time - if Ollie thought about it on his Infinity and decided against it, I guess there will be no added benefit - and of course it keeps the cost down :wink:

As for the finish, I'm still stuck in two minds - the high polish basses look great in Nirvana Black and as Flo pointed out, I will mark the oil finish with my resting thumb, but I'm slighty dubious of the laquered neck - I love the smoothness of my natural oiled Thumbs & SS1, but have had laquered necks on other basses years ago but can't remember if they were troublesome or not - I think I'm getting tempted by the HP if only to keep the bass looking good!

Oh dear, decisions, decisions.........Jan, is there any chance of a mock up with the high polish, please??

If you are willing to pay, you can have the neck painted with flat colour, making it easer til move across. There`s a custom Vampyre with nirvana black finish with a flat-painted neck in the Custom Shop-gallery. :wink:

Hey Moo,

I think the Infinity is the best bass to add a piezo. Maybe Ollie didn't need it, but I sure do for example. Piezo adds a sound similar to an accoustic bass guitar. A fretless with piezo can sound like an upright. Try to play basses with piezo, and think for yourself if you need it or not. Mixed with the magnetic pickups, can add a more "organic" sound to your bass.
Maybe you don't need it, but try it first :-)

Kris, thanks very much for the sound bytes and the weblink - as I said, it's given me more of a dilemna!

I need to try and take Flo's advice somehow and try a bass with a piezo bridge.......but where will I find such a beast near me?!

No worries! It's a tough choice, but it will just add more to the palette :D
 
the piezo bridge can be stopped if you don't like it .. but i'm sure you will use it all the time with your fretless bass, it sounds awsome with plain body basses, imagine how it sound with that amazing hollowbody!!! :)
