RIP Les Paul. A legend of music, I feel fortunate to have seen him perform at Iridium in New York, 2004 and 2007. He was a real innovator and entertainer even into his 90's.

Leo died 20 yrs ago.

George Fullerton a few weeks ago.

Now Les Paul.

Thaz the last of the pioneers.



About 10 years ago I was choosing between
going downtown to hear Charlie Musselwhite
or right around the corner to hear Les Paul. I
figgered I'd better catch LP while he was still
alive and kicking. Then he carried on another
10 years after that. 94 years old. Jeeezzz ....

I'm happy I got to see him when I did... when he was 89, and then a few years later. He could still play... but his interaction with the band and the audience, and his anecdotes were the real heart of the show.

Yup.

When I heard him, more like 12 or 13 than 10
years ago, he had some piano player that he'd
recently met. Piano Man was on for the entire
gig. Sitting in for novelty's sake was a subway
"artiste", who had 2 walking sticks strung with
piano wire, pickups, and 9v batteries. Not sure
how that was spozed to sound, since he never
actually got all that stuff to work ... but LP was
very kind and supportive, and insisted that it
had all worked cool enuf back in the subway ...

Dig it. THE Legendary LP, 80-something years
old, riding the subway and picking up various
odd characters to feature at his Iridium gigs !
What - a - Mensche !

Something like Pete Seeger. Musically, Seeger
is no Les Paul. He's all about politics and about
justice. But bottom line is, both men are really
into bringing folks together ... community.

He was a great one...

He will be missed, but he will live on through his legacy...
 
Les Paul changed the world.His mark will be felt for generations to come.I cant even imagine what the world would been like if things like the Les Paul guitar or the classic Fenders never came about.True icons.
Now he's laying it down with Jimi,Cliff,Janis,Randy,Jim & The Ox,to mention but a few.
 
The LP is still THE rock guitar. Put an LP with a Marshall amp and you can shred the world.
 




Maybe we could have a world-wide 60
seconds of non-shred in his memory ?
