Recording a Bass Guitar (Part 1)

To begin with, let’s first say that recording a bass guitar is not that much of a tricky process. There are some different approaches to doing this from different sources. But all of them are part of two main approaches, which are: (1)recording it directly to the MTR (Multi Track Recorder) or (2) using an amplifier to also record the sound of the instrument coming out of the amplifier and get the sound of that particular piece of equipment.

There are many things that people don’t take into account when recording their bass tracks. But we will cover everything. So the first thing we need to cover is to make sure that our bass guitar is well set up, since this will influence how the instrument will sound like within the final mix, and the best way to get the best sound recorded is to know what you are looking for in the final mix.

When I say “well set up”, I’m mostly referring to the intonation. The intonation of your bass determines if the natural harmonics of the instrument will be in tune or not, and it is very important that this part of the set up is done correctly in order to make our bass tracks fit in with the other instruments, or it will sound somewhat out of tune, even if when you tune the open strings, your electronic tuner says that your bass guitar is in tune. If you don’t know how to fix the intonation of your bass your own, take your instrument to a professional repair shop or look up online how to do it. There are several articles covering this on the Warwick Bass online forums at www.warwick.de/forum that you can read in order to learn how to fix the intonation of your bass in case this is needed.

Now let’s get down to business, so let’s start with the basics. Before we cover the EQ’s and the compressors we need to get a good level to the MTR (which can be analog or digital, depending on what you have or what you prefer). The standard school of thought on this is to get the input signal at the 0dB in analog terms. In the digital world though, there is nothing after 0dB, so it’s best to try and imitate that. I try to record my bass tracks at -3 dB to leave some headroom for peaks and strong notes.

The other important thing to mention in this part of the article is to use a good preamp. The preamplifier is what makes the conversion of your instrument signal to a line level signal that is loud enough for you to get a good sound. This is one of the most important pieces of equipment when recording your bass. Many people use the peamp built-in in their amplifiers and other people decide to use high end studio equipment for this process.

In my case I normally use a Warwick X-TREME 10.1 amplifier and take a direct signal out of the DI Out balanced output on the back and go to an AVALON VT-737sp and then use an Apogee AD-16X to do the conversion from analog to digital to be able to work in the Pro Tools system.

The process explained above is the one I use when recording ONLY the direct signal of the bass without using the sound of amplifier cabinets to blend them in with the direct signal, which we will cover in the next article.

 
So Oliver. Say I want to record going through my 600... Would I have to do is basiclly what you have too?

These pieces of gear are very expensive and found only in very hi-end studios. There other preamps that you can use to record yourself besides the Avalon. The brands can change depending on who's doing the recording and what gear he/she prefers. What never varies though is the signal flow:

ANALOG:

Instrument -> Preamp -> MTR (Multi-Track Recorder, such as a tape machine)

DIGITAL:

Instrument -> Preamp -> A/D (Analog/Digital) Conversion -> MTR

You can use any DI box to take get the direct signal of your bass, but I prefer using my amplifiers to take advantage of the features, such as EQ and compression that are built into them when you set the DI out to "post" mode.

What is an A/D (Analog/Digital) Conversion?

What would be easier if I'm trying to just send it straight to a computer software?

What I'm planing on hopefully doing in the next couple of months is being able to record my self in a new practice studio me and my step father are building.

We're here to answer.

Analog soundwaves are a constant variation in sound pressure that the human ear transform into sound that our brain can understand. The same thing happens when a computer tries to understand an analog soundwave. It converts it into a digital soundwave by taking snapshots of the soundwave at different spots in time. For example in a 44.1KHz (Standard CD Audio) the digital media takes 44,100 Snapshots of the sound every second, therefore making it very accurate. A/D Conversion is about that process. It is represents the conversion in which the computer takes these snapshots that it can show you later on your editing software for you to edit and hear and make your adjustments too. The more snapshots the more accurate the sound will be.

If you are just trying to go into your computer you will still need a preamp and a A/D Converter. Most of the new small home studio hardware these days comes with all of this built-in so that you only need to plug in and hit record on your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation, commonly known as Computer). Some DAW applications are Pro Tools, MOTU Digital Performer, Logic Pro from Apple, and a little more on the consumer side there is Cubase and Nuendo from Steinberg.

The hardware can vary depending on the application. If you want to use Pro Tools, you need to buy hardware that works with pro tools. For a small practice studio, you are looking into a Digidesign M Box or Digi 003. There are also some other options from M-AUDIO that will do the trick with Pro Tools M-Powered that you should also look into. If you are looking into other softwares such as Logic or Digital Performer any of the interfaces by MOTU should work fine for you as well as any M-AUDIO stuff. My personal favorite, which is the one I use at home for finishing a project or just laying down some ideas is the MOTU Ultralight which is very compact and you can take anywhere. Comes with two mic preamps built in as well 8 more inputs for you to use with other mic preamps. Is also have 14 different outputs in case you need to take it with you for a live show and take out 14 different instruments out of a sequence. And it's only about 550 US Dollars. Pretty darn good for the money.

I have a Tubapath 10.1. Correct me if I am wrong, but the manual says not to use amp without cabinets connected. Is it true or not?
And another question, when taking direct signal, do you use post or pre (eq and preamp) option?

I have found that Sansamp Para driver is one hell of a good thing for recording and live as well. I put it between direct head output and line to mixing console, does a nice job.

A nice question. It is quite difficult to explain, you have to try them both to hear the difference. To my mind the biggest difference is that Para (set in a certain way "deep tube setting" in users manual) makes your bass sound very deep, it adds this sub low feel that you cannot achieve with Bass driver. and this is just one way to change smth. in yr sound.
Bass driver is like an overdrive, you add gain, presence, treb, bass and blend it with the clean signal. With Para - you really shape your tone.
