Playing the upright bass! (string swing content!)

End of Aigust/September this year i started playing the upright bass, because two guitarists in my class who already had a string swing-duo needed someone to play bass. I've wanted to play upright for ages, and there was my chance. I told my teacher, he being an upright player too, I wanted to play, and he went through the roof in happiness!

So, after a couple of days, Molde Strengeleik Duo turned into Molde Strengeleik Trio 8: You can hear 8 (out of 11) songs from our first gig on our myspace (myspace.com/moldestrengeleiktrio). Mostly Django Reinhardt, but some others too!



Please, check it out, and tell me what you think!

Ps. I don't have my own upright yet, borrowing one for now, but I'm getting my own soonish ;)

Man, I really dig this ! ... It's one of my future dreams to learn how to play da big thing myself ! ... and if you need any inspiration... check out that fellow Scandinavian bass player Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen (The Viking)...

Man! That's sick! I've would never dream of playing as fast as that on an upright bass, actually it seems almost physical impossible to me! :P
 
I'm sure Niels spent very much time practicing and his bass has had a great set-up. The action appears pretty low.
 
You don't really play all the notes, you just aim for the accented ones =P.

Phenomenal, the intro and final part where they play the same line is totally awesome.

 
You managed to play upright after 2 months of study? Not that's impressive!!!

Triumph RB ?

MMmmmnnnn ! ! ! Any real substance to
that rumor? Or is it just wishful thinking ?

Lately I've been gigging a Carruthers 41"
EUB for a coupla weeks. Nobody's showing
me how, but it has partial edge markings.

The first thing you realize, even WITHOUT
the big doghouse body, is that it's not any
version of a bass guitar. The scales are laid
out the same, and thaz the only similarity.

Several gigs into the Carruthers and friday nite
I'm hearing those long strings wring out [yeah
that "w" is intentional ... ], and I'm seeing the
look on Ms Diva's face, and I asked out loud "I
wonder what I'm gonna do now with all those
bass geetars .... " And she laffed but really it's
NOT funny ... it's SERIOUS !
