Hi guy,

I took my Streamer I 5 to the store to check the output problem, they told me my Bartolini PU is passive, the SD circuit on the bass is active.........WTF.

I got this bass like that for years.......the ex-owner should be a careless person....

The problem is I had took out the Barts pickup and found that they are factory put in, the circuit was changed by the ex-owner, I have to change one of them but I can't find Barts preamp in Taiwan, too rare, the SD and EMG pickup in the store don't fit the hole......I prefer to keep the Barts PU so I will need Barts preamp, but it will cost me alot to purchase oversea, I must have a B plans.

Is the holes on the Streamer I 5 are all the same? what is the size on your SSI? mine is 94 build, would it caused any different ?

What is your suggestion?

Joe

Having passive Pickups and an active Preamp is common, like in the Corvette $$. This can't be the reason for having trouble with the output.
As far as I remember you had a problem with low output, right?

There is nothing wrong with using passive pickups with active electronics... there are many basses that come like this and it sounds like that is the stock config for your bass.

The output level is not likely due to the passive pickups, in some cases, passive pups can run hotter than active ones...

Dimarzio actually talked about this once. They said active pickups usually have low outputs. Probaly why Warwick kept the double buck's pickups passive and just made the preamp active.

thats why actives are usually paired up with an active preamp...to bring the output up...

EH!?!?!

This revelation flies in the face of my understanding of pickups....someone like Ollie, Seth or JPT need to clear this up for me!

Personally, I just CANNOT imagine how active pickups would have LOWER output.

:(\

Confused!

it was designed to get rid of interference. as you have weaker magnets in actice pickups you get attract little interference and when the preamp boosts it you still have little interference. instead of passive pickups which pick up more interference as they have stronger magnets

this is one reasson why people say the $$ has such an outrageous output. the passive pickups have stronger magnets than if they were active and the active preamp further boosts it

yeah but DiMarzio said GUITAR active PU have more output than passive pu.

Great input (no pun intended) there Stroud. Dimarzio said that actives don't have as high an output as passives on a description of I think it was the X2N's. In my opinion EMG's can sound so polyphonic. Wow Warwick has the greatest price/value ratio of any other bass. Take this as an example the most basic Tobias bass costs 1,500 dollars and it's horrible in comparison to a std corvette.

Guys, read what Stroud & I have said.We are saying THE SAME THING Dimarzio are saying.
Let's read this SLOWLY;Passive pickups are HOTTER than active.
Dont believe it?Ask Dimarzio.
 X10

It could be an impedance problem.
Not alla electronics works well with a passive pickup output.
Some manufacturers have different models according to the kind of pickup to be matched

This is absolutely true.
Active doesn't mean higher output, it means lower impedance, some compression and more lows/highs.

I've had many bass guitars, and the hotter output was produced by a passive G&L SB-1 G&L (Precision-style)

Mr. Rabble - you are right, that is what I talking about, EMG told me the passive PU should use the 250K impedance, the active PU should use 25K impedance...........maybe another way around which I don't remember....

maybe you thought that electronics with battery are all the same but they don't, the electronics connect to the passive PU are different to the one conncet to the active PU, they are in different impedance, the bartolini PU on my SSI is passive so I should use the electronics for passive PU.

What kind of power amp is he using? Cant do too much with a 200w combo.
The bass may be fine and his system under powered or poor quality.

Mr. Rabble is right. There really is something to the impedance idea. A 250K output (passive pickup) cannot possibly drive a 25K preamp input without serious signal loss due to loading. That could account for approximately 90% of the signal being lost.

The active pickups are buffered by an internal op amp. Even though they have lower amplitude, the op amp gives them more push due to buffering.

O

Bartolini makes an active circuit suited for their low output, high impedance pickups

I means on-board preamp in the bass guitar, not the amplifier.

now I put Augilar OBP-3 on-board preamp with passive kit in my SSI, the problem solved, you can not mess with wrong impedance, not only very low output also limited treble and others...

The Bartolini circuit is too complicated and too many option, the people in Taiwan just don't wanna touch them, or I prefer to use Bartolini circuit to match my Bartolini PU.

I know the vintage warp bass is crap in comparison to any warwick, but the active wilkinson pickups have much less meat than the $$ passives, which I lowered to control easier.

Glad your problem is solved chap.
