OT: Some happy snaps during my trip to China

Greetings from sunny Huangdao.

I'm over here in China for a few months teaching at a University in Huangdao, Qingdao in the Shandong province.

Working pretty hard, but having a great time too.

Just thought I might share a few of my happy snaps I've grabbed over the last couple of weeks.

Those were some great pix. Have you taken some photography classes or something. They look professional. Good job. Looked like a good time.

the pictures are truly amazing. I think you've done wayyyyyyy more than just taking some photography classes. 8)
So.......what do you teach in China ?? Photography ?? :D

China is frickin' awesome! I love it there. I was there for a month once with my sister. We had a blast. Enjoy yourself, brah!

And might I add.....MMMMMMM! Purple beans....!
 
Hi guys - thanks for all the kind words.

Photography is just a little hobby - I'm nothing more than an enthusiastic amateur. Most of my photos suck really badly.

I've taken a course at Nikon School via correspondence, and have read some books - but mostly, it's not so much about driving the camera, as it is is about learning to see. I've still got lots to learn.

I'm glad you enjoyed them!

Thirdthumb: I wish I could teach photography (or music)! I'm afraid I only teach computer systems engineering - mostly networking stuff ;)

Paperbag: No - I don't use photoshop - I use ViewNX for browsing and GIMP for a little editing. All I do is a little cropping if I don't get the composition right in camera, and a few simple adjustments such as levels, curves, unsharp mask, contrast etc as needed.

really nice pictures. China's culture is so awesome! Great to see something else than western culture.
 
Very nice pics... Thank you for sharing. Very enjoyable to see. The Rainbow shot was my favorite... Who don't love rainbows. And seeing the group walking through all the green and the rain with the bright red umbrellas. Striking image.
 
I think Eberbachl is a bit inspired by the National Geographic photographers ;) and really, some of his shots are just as good.

could you tell us more on that Rainbow Valley? do they have water on all the time to get the rainbow on all the time? or it just happened to be raining when you were there?

Rainbow valley is kind of a mix between a nature reserve and an amusement park.

They have everything from Fallow deer to the rainbow valley walk to amusement park rides to paintball!

:lol:

The Rainbow valley bit is a really elaborate system of water sprinklers set into the hill as you walk up through the valley for around 300m or so. The sprinklers are on all the time as far as I can gather, so as long as the sun is shining, you see rainbows.

When I took the pictures above it was a great sunny blue sky day ;)
 
Well, I do teach Digital Photography to graphic design/film majors at a private technical college, (I'm in class right now typing as my students work on a Photoshop/Final Cut sideshow). Your images are quite good. If I may make a suggestion though :wink: . It seems that many of your images are over saturated a bit (too much color). When you oversaturate an image, in camera or in Photoshop (GIMP) you loose detail in the highlights. I am constantly telling my students to be subtle with their changes so as not to over correct their images. I know color is great, but too much and detail suffers, like in the umbrella shots. But I am being nit picky here so please don't take offense, they are very nice pics!

But yeah, I agree, nice shots. You definitely have a good eye for composition, and as you said, seeing an image is just as important as camera handling. I especially like the food bowl shot (my favorite), really nice depth of field/focus, the most 'professional' looking shot of the bunch. Have fun in China, I am a little jealous. And thanks for sharing your trip with us!:D

Wow! It looks like you're having a blast over there. Keep the pics coming. They are very interesting. I hope I can visit China again some day. I have traveled all over the world and the two places I wish I could visit again are China and Germany. China more-so (no offense to anyone from Germany) because it's almost the total opposite from life here in the States, which growing more and more unbarable with every passing day.
 
WOW!!1 those pics are really good quality there man! I loved all of them. keep on posting more. this gives us a break from time to time on the everyday stuff. :wink:
