I'm looking at maybe gettinga new preamp for my Rockbass, but I'm not sure what to get. I'm wanting some good versatility in tone and the stock preamp isn't really cutting it for me. I want a good slap tone, which, obviously I can get, but it doesn't really give me good smooth mid tones for older stuff that I might want to play. Would getting a three-band active EQ expensive? How much does it usually cost to route another pot in?
 
ive never met anyone who didn't like the Sansamp Bass Driver...

you could start off with that... even if you get tired of it (like me) ... you'd always find a good use for it whether recording, or as a "in case of emergency" pedal.

+1 The onboard preamp is just a... preamp. You'll get the same results with an external preamp. SA is a really nice little pedal.
Of course you can get a 3 band eq wich is nice, and you don't need an extra pot, you can ask it for 3 pots, like for thumb NT.

Well that pedal looks about 200 bucks brand new, which is a little bit out of my price range being as I just bought the bass. An Aguilar OBP-3SK onboard preamp costs 140 brand new, and it has separate bass and treble and a push/pull midrange (what does that toggle do for a midrange? only ever seen passive/active toggles), but I don't see a volume knob in this kit (I may be retarded, I don't know) and I don't want to have a useless or open pot hole. Any advice on this or onboard preamps in general would be great.
 
Oh, and this is just a question, I'm probably not going to, but would changing the MEC Golds destroy the snappy "sound of wood?"
 
SOme of the Warwick GROWL is coming from the MEC pickups ;-)

DONT do anythign to the MEC golds! i'm thinking of changing my Seymour Duncans to them!
 
Well I just found out about a brand of pickups called Q-Tuners and they have some of the nicest sounds I've ever heard. ( ) Now these are pretty much the only thing I'd consider changing my MECs to, I guess, but I don't have $280 for a pair of them...

The Q-tuners are extremely transparent pickups, that's their whole concept... I'm getting one on my "other" bass...
