non warwick recomendations

i relize alot of you guys play metal, rock and session, but i might be starting up a band that has effects. I love toying with multi effects pedals although i lose the bottom end and anyways. I was wondering in your experiences what is the best bass for using effects? Im assuming somthing passive maybe with j pickups, but likeim thinking in general not just warwick. I dont know if there is a bass like this... i dont want to spend over 2000 candian and i dont want a stienberger... lol im sorry just not my style although i hear they sounds amazing with fx.

As for your question, don't think there is a bass better than another when it comes to effects. But for alternatives, maybe look at other forums? :) Like www.talkbass.com and similar. They'll talk you to death with 100's of options in your price range, with J pickups, passive and whatnot. Hell I can think of one right away, and starts with an 'F'.

www.talkbass.com and you might end up with a J bass or a Rickenbacker :P.
 
Frankly, I've owned 3 Jazz Basses and 3 Ricks over the last 28 years and the Jazz bass is dated technology compared to the Big W.

The Rickenbacker is like throwing a drowning man a rock.
 
I mean no offense tremor100, but buying a bass that fits your effects is kind of like building the roof before you've laid a foundation. In my opinion anyway, developing a good sound begins with your bass, head, cab, etc. Effects are just the finishing touches. Best wishes.
 
lol, i own a thumb BO and its my baby...but you gys seemed experienced and alot of you have owned sevral basses. It was just a question what to look for... tone wise yes warwick beats em all hence why ispent thousands of dollars getting one. But im not gonna hear the tone lol, its gonna be synth beats. Perhaps it was the wrong place to ask but i like isaid u guys are experienced and i check here almost daily i dont check talk bass frequently. And in terms of setting the foundation and i shouldnt be worried about the bass, well if i can make the stuff sound better then why wouldnt i? Anyways thanks.
 
If you are using major effects your bass will make little difference.

There are a few way to use effects without losing bottom end...

First you could try to split your signal so that you have a clean signal and an effected signal. The easiest way to do this is to run two amps, but this is unwieldy and expensive. If your band is using a decent PA send your effected signal to the PA, but keep your amp clean.

Secondly, make sure you use high quality effects that are specifically designed for bass.

I know that this might sound stupid, but... some instruments sound better with efects. I have a pedal board with an octaver and a modified EH bassballs

I used it a lot with an EB SR5, and it was cool. The octaver had problems to recognize some notes, so it was pretty hart to use.
I took a yamaha TRB 5 II, very nice instrument IMHO, but the sound just fade out in combination with the effects, I could not use them at all
My new W LX 5 is perfect!!!! the effects sounds FAT, and the octaver ring the notes long and nice down to A.
