new pickups for my Thumb..

Hey guyz!
i have a big big dilemma in changing my pickups and electronics... I have a '96 Thumb NT6 with SD basslines PUs and mec(?) 18V electronics.. i`m thinkin` of changing them, even i`m quite satisfied with them.. but.. they are old... and maybe i can find something better... more agressive.. and more growly... i play hardcore/metal and i have a very agressive fingerstyle.. and my tuning is F#BEADG :evil: (custom W strings.. thanx 2 Florin)...

So.. I`m lookin for the most growly, woody, agressive and punchy PUps and onboard preamp...

hi dragos, MEC pups are just right for warwikcs! they seem to be some kind of EMG's. or Bartolini, they sound darker. these three kind of pups are available i think at florin.

If there's nothing wrong with the pups & eq why change them?
If you just want to refresh your tone I'd definatly go with MEC,which were designed for Warwick basses.

well.. i`m thinkin` at emg pickups (i heard that they are very similar to MEC but they kinda have their own sound and take the Wsound away)... or maybe some new basslines... and for the onboard preamp, aguilar OBP3... i`ve heard only good things about it...
what do you guys think?

EMG's don't take away the W sound....... They are a little more brilliant than the MEC's......of course we are only talking about "J" style pickups. Things like the strings you are using will effect the W sound more.

MEC's are great pickups too......better suited than anything else for all warwicks. They are perfect in my opinion.

The pots are a part of the electronics, so it doesn't seem llike you can just use a different stacked pot. At least it seems to be this way.

I got a Thumb 6 bolt on with SD soapbar PUs & MEC 2 band preamp, I was thinking to change the pickup due to the low output but the size of the PUs make me hard to find a replacement, EMG doesn't make pus to replace the SD pus........I find that MEC, EMG, Bartolini are all better than SD on Warwick, but in this case, I should replace the MEC preamp to SD preamp to get better sound, somebody on this forum had do that and feel the huge difference...........

No matter what kind of modify you do, I would like how different it will be!

I tried Bartolini pups and a Bart preamp in my Thumb NT. Sounded great, but not as aggressive as the MEC.

I now have the MEC pups and kept the Bartolini 3-way preamp and my bass sounds better than ever!

The only thing is, the Bartolini preamp doesn't give you a Vol./Blend stack/switching pot, so I had to use the MEC pot with the Bart preamp instead. Also swapped the tone stack pot so that I could still use the original knobs.

This is the sound and look for my baby!

maybe you wanna check out q-tuners.
they are said to sound incredible, like nothing else before that. and are said to sound just like your bass does, and not to change the sound.
so, if that is true, maybe that would be the perfect set with a glockenklang preamp....

you're welcome.

they have neodymium magnets inside, very powerful, and they have much more polepieces than normal pickups (and all of them are adjustable).

just write a mail to the company, they are very kind and will answer all your questions.
they will tell you the size of the pickups.

and if you decide to buy them, please let me know how they sound

i wanted to buy a set for myself, but they didn't have soapbars that would fit my bass yet....
so i have to wait until they do.
