New Custom Shop Fretless ideas please.....

Firstly, I must say I think it was a terrible mistake selling my recently acquired Afzelia CS Fretless Corvette!

So much so that I've just sold all of my archery gear to pay for another one!

I'm currently deciding whether I will buy a Bubinga Standard Corvette Fretless, or order another Custom Shop Corvette Fretless.

So - I'd love to hear any ideas you would have for a Custom Shop Fretless Corvette 4 string.

What do you all think the perfect Custom Shop Fretless 4 string Corvette would be?

Swamp ash back, maple top, ebony fb. 3 band eq, or Vol Vol Tone Tone, and MEC active pickups.
 
A lot of luthiers recommend walnut for fretless
 
I'd like to hear a mahogany bodied FL Corvette with piezo.The neck would have to wenge or avangkol,natually. 8)
 
Swamp Ash - Nice deep lows, Maple top - snappy highs? Bass might be a bit light though - I don't like the balance of the Ash Corvettes. Too light in the body. I'd want something near the weight of Bubinga. A Bubinga Corvette balances beautifully.

Walnut, Mahogany?

Not sure about the characteristics of Walnut or Mahogany (and weights).

Anybody know much about these timbers?

I'd initially thought passive electronics and MEC passive J pups. I'm not totally against Active I guess, but have always thought the passive sound goes well with fretless...

Definitely an Ebony fingerboard!

From what I understand, mahogany is pretty heavy, and has a very warm low end. Walnut, I don't know I'm afraid.

+1 on the TJ pups
 
Wenge neck? I prefer Ovangkol :D

Maple body....not sure - possibly a bit bright for a fretless?

How do the TJ pickups differ tonally from the J pickups?
 
I always thought that the one you sold was pretty much The Ultimate Fretless Bass :)
 
Yeah it was actually pretty beautiful, I'm just considering how (if at all) it could be improved.

you could get a thin maple veneer underneath the afzelia layer on the matched headstock ;)

and maybe some stacked J pickups to get rid of the buzz.
 
I know what you mean about the buzz with the MEC J passive pickups.

....but actually, after properly shielding the pickup cavities it was all but non-existent.

I have a Martin D-15 guitar (mahogany top, sides, back) and it has a warm, mellow tone with great mids annd defined, but not overly "sparkly", highs. I think it would make a killer fretless with the piezo.
 
Mahogany body, neck through purpleheart/mahogany neck, ebony board, 1 twin jazz pickup in your favorite position, piezzo, passive, all black hardware.
Now that i've nailed the perfect bass you just have to ask someone for a mockup :)

That would be a beautiful bass for sure, but I think a Corvette NT would severely blow the budget.

Can the CS even do a NT with a Mahogany/Pupleheart neck?

Also - I think the MEC TJ pickup is active, isn't it?
 
It seems the CS neck timber options are Maple, Ovangkol, or Wenge.

Is that right?

Of the three, I choose Ovangkol - I love the neck on my Bubinga 'Vette.

Nah, I like the bolt on just fine.

If they were the same price I think I'd still get the bolt on, but even having said that, I'm guessing the NT would be quite a bit more expensive.

Well - I'm blown away.

Eric from Frontier Music in Ivanhoe just got back to me with a price for a Standard Bubinga Fretless Passive Corvette, and the price was so good I just had to pull the trigger!

....so - I now have a Corvette STD Bubinga Fretless Passive 4 string on the way - should be here in a few weeks.

That's not the end of the CS route though.

I'm going to put some careful thought into the CS options, and order a CS next year to go along with it.
