Need your help with deciding what sound = what bass

Hey guys,

first up, no i don't mean to spam in here :P just don't want to mess around with different questions inside other topics :).

Since i don't have the luxury to jump in any nearby music store and try out every single bass out there i have to resort to lots of searching and asking on the internet to attain that "own" kind of sound I'm looking for.

whereas my question is what kind of model would be the choice for me since my taste revolves mainly in rock (clips beneath) and on the side, punk and funk. to give you guys somewhat of an idea what kind of sound i'm looking for and since Randy came with the idea to post the sound that i liked aswell i looked up some clips with bassists or tracks which are what I'm fond off.

i couldn't really name them.. since it was mainly j-rock so here are the links ^^


Nightmare, this is the kind of sound i'm looking for. that slight growl is a + for me :P (or low.. don't really know much about the terms)

my main intrest goes to the sound from Ni~Ya the bassist from Nightmare, that is the kind of sound i want to achieve, offcourse different strings will probably have to be taking into account and my choice in amp (probably roland cb30, or a warwick bluecab depends on how long i can stretch my patience)

if any of you could help me on this, i'd be very gratefull.

im thinking the ff warwicks for this:

1.) buzzard BO 5
2.) Infinity SN and NT

those warwicks arent treble heavy and could give the boom you are looking for.

just avoid the trebly warwicks like the Thumb NT and Vampyre SN - although these are the ones i actually prefer (lots of attack and treble bite)
 
i should have stated to :) that it would be my first bass ^^, so it's going to be a rockbass, i don't have the reserves yet to go for a real warwick right on ^^

Well, as I said, I can't advice on which bass, but from what I was hearing, I would really be thinking ampeg or gallien krueger as far as amps. Especially coupled with a bass that has so much natural tone and growl too it. Then again, I have no experience with Warwick amps. But you know, I haven't heard it through a real bass amp yet (I will this weekend), but I think my RockBass Streamer would do well with that music.

Nice links tho, thanks for sharing those. I liked them.

my bad... i ddnt know i was in the rockbasses subforum.

im thinking a corvette or streamer rockbass could do the job. the beauty of wanting a "round" tone is that its very easy to achieve with passive basses.
 
well i don't really know what you define as a "round" sound :), yet i'm not really up to speed with any of the terms such as low, attack, bite ect :).
 
I think the Streamer Stage II is a good choice! Is has that kind of nasal quality you hear in the videos you posted!

EDIT: Oops, missed that it was supposed to be a RockBass....in that case, I recommend the Fortress!
 
Ryugu. Don't get an american made amp as your first. Save your money, get a decent european made amp.
Warwick for example :)

+1 but i think from the Rockbass stable a good other choice would be the corvette proline.

But if you ask me what i would do: i would save some more money and go for the real deal: Streamer Stage II or a Thumb (the BO is real nasty and cheaper :wink: ) but that's just what i would do now...
 
which fortress may i ask you are talking about? :) the 4 string p/j or the 5 string j/j? :)

and how much is that streamer stage 2? since it will be my first ever bassguitar so i gotta watch the little ones a bit :P

[EDIT] woow.. nvm on that streamer stage 2 O.o the shop i was looking had several from the price range around 2899 euro's ..., i'm just poor collage kid :P

Now that's just discriminating based
on country or origin if I'm correct.

I don't think it matters where it's made,
it matters if it sounds good and he likes
it. ;)
 
as Tyler says, if I'd find an American made amp which i love, I'd go with that :P. my main thing now is being on budget and have a great starter :P

tho the people that say fortress, which one? :P the p/j or the j/j, i take it their is some difference between them so :p
 
Well, in all honesty, it would depend
on if the music you want to play needs
a B string. The B is the firth string on the
five string Fortress.

There's not a whole lot of punk music
that calls for a low B string, in fact, I
can't think of one punk band that I am
familiar with, in which their bass player
uses a five string.

So, in my opinion, I would go with the
P/J four string, I just don't think you're
going to need that fifth string, and it has
been said before, know if you like playing
a five string better than a four string before
buying one, or that B string becomes
just a very expensive thumb rest.

My ADVICE, my OPINION, I would recommend
the four string.

However, here in the states, we have a saying,
(several variations of this one, actually.)
Opinions are like arse holes.
Everyone has one, and no one wants to
hear it.

So, take people's opinions with a grain
of salt.

Myself personally, am pretty much just
a four string player. But, I have owned
a six string in the past, and usually when
I go shopping I pick up a five to begin
with... I don't know, attribute it to the
nu metal hater somewhere in me, lol.

(Five string basses really gained their
popularity in the mid to late nineties during
the death of 'Grunge' and birth of the
subgenre of 'Nu Metal' ie. Korn, Slipknot,
etc etc... However, this is debatable as well.)

I know what you mean. Nobuto (the bassist for UVERworld) is my role model for sound. Once I got the band score for Timeless, I saw he played Warwicks and mainly an SSII. From then on I wanted an SSII SOOO bad.

Skip to 1:23~ and listen to that GROWLING bass. I LOVE IT. With my new Ernie Ball strings, I get nearly an identical sound to that.

Oh, and skip to 2:30~ for some slap love from Nobuto :D

I think he uses his SSI 4 stringer in this one. It's downtuned a 1/2 step like most of their songs.

They make some amazing music :D
 
uhm, tyler :oops: i stated in the top post :) that i'd be going for that same sound as Ni~Ya (Nightmare) not for a punk sound but that lovely rock soundish thingy <333 ^^

and i just wondered what the sound difference is between the two, mainly about that "Nasal" thing previously mentioned. since one is a p/j and the 5er a j/j.


and vpshockwave, i know the song :), yet i can't listen to the bass right now (at work :P) i'll do that right after i get home :), yet i just love some of those jrock bassists :P like Ai from Deathgaze.. but no way in hell im ever gonna play a 7 string :P, and Reita from the Gazette got alot of sweet lines. tho for now i just wanna be able to get the same sound as Ni~Ya (the nightmare vids :P) since that's the kind of sound i love :B:P
 
I was practicing "the WORLD" by Nightmare a few months ago. The bass is pretty fast paced. It was pretty hard to nail down. Lots of grace notes and some licks that made me fly up and down the fretboard. I also love their song "Raison D'etre". Less complex bass, but an awesome song over.

Sorry to go offtopic. It's hard to find other fellow j-rock lovers :D
 
hehe :P yeah the world is fun, since i don't have a bass or anything i've been playing basslines on my gf's accoustic guitar (gotta improvise :P)

try out shian's basline or my favorite believe :) (both Nightmare ^^) or alice nine's kowloon :) also very nice

or if you'd like i can upload all my jrock tabs? i've got my share of gazette, luna sea, alice nine, naitomea, few of an cafe (god yes -_-) girugamesh, deathgaze, MUCC, few from Sadie, Acidman, Lots of Dir en Grey (not my fav but just alot of nice basslines ^^) i might've missed some but heck :P

Actually, I already got my bass. A 2005 5-string RockBass Streamer LX, and I tell ya my friend, she is beautiful. Played through a little Crate acoustic guitar amp, she sounds great. She has a very deep warm natural tone and has a bit of a growl to her I just love. My bass amp (an old Randall RBA 500 racked with an Alessis Quadraverb driving a Sunn 2-15 cabinet - No Laughing, this rig may be old, but it still has a lot of ballz) anyway, my amp is packed away with my PA and stuff in the spare bedroom I use for storage. It's way to big to setup in my bedroom. So I just bought a used Gallien Krueger backline 112 to use as a practice amp. Hopefully it will be here by weeks end.

Anyway, in another thread I made a comment about if I had to play a gig today, I would bring the RockBass, but would most likely end up playing my old trusty Aria. You know.... Umm... Let me give you a little advise... Becareful about what you say. It's almost like "Life" not only has a good set of ears and hears everything you say, it has a sense of humor and sometimes makes those things happen. I got a phone call the other day and it appears one of our local bands has a gig at some hole-in-the-wall bar in town and their bass player will be out of town... will I fill in? HaHaHa teach me to open my mouth (or in this case, move my fingers) I haven't touched a bass in 1 1/2 years, I sit in with a band for 1 set, get inspired, buy a new (used, new to me) bass and 2 weeks later am asked to actually play a gig. I definately need to learn to keep my big mouth shut!

Anyway, I said yes. Have till friday to dig out my amp and hope it's still in good condition (I know the new practice amp won't be big enough to gig with) and try to get ready to play live. Luckily these guys are mostly classic rock with a little country thrown in, so I should be ok. But at least I will get a chance to give my new RockBass a real trial run under fire (so to speak) so I will post a better review of the instrument after the gig. I will also take the Gallien Krueger with me and give it a try, but I know 100 watt practice amp will not be able to keep up with a full band, but will give me a chance to really blow it out without having neighbors complaining. I do like the sound of a Gallien Krueger. I think that with the sound of a Warwick would make a killer combination. It has a line level output, so I might try running it through the Randall and see what that sounds like.

Also... Again referencing another thread, Pic's of my new baby have been requested. I dug up my digital camera; dead batteries. So I will buy some batteries and try and get picks of the bass, and possibly a few shots of it in action. I warn you you now, I am one old, fat, ugly SOB, so you will have to view the pic's at your own risk.

Anyway... I think I've rambled long enough for one post. I better get back to practicing if I don't want to make a total arse of myself friday. When I used to play around town before, I was kind of known for playing some pretty wild bass solos. So I'm thinking I better work something up for this friday, just in case I get asked for one. Oppsss, there I go again running my mouth. Now I will have to do one for sure.... lol
