My new wenge trussrod cover...

Well I went through all those blocks of ovankol with no luck. And a new set of wenge blocks showed up in the mail... I decided to make something easy... A wenge trussrod cover and surprisingly wenge is so much easier to work with than ovankol, Go figure! Well below is a few pics through the process of doing it.

Heres a peice off of the block that I use to make the cover out of.



And the tools my lovely wife got for me off of ebay. (were getting along much better now if you could'nt tell :P )



The basic layout of the cover - It was later changed and shortened as you will see. I originally decided to go with a 3 screw idea but later went with a single screw after seeing a few covers made by carvin.



I also used some resin to fill in any voids in the wood and to smooth stuff out a bit. Once the resin went on I let it dry then sanded it smooth.




And after sanding it I decided to shorten it and use the 1 screw like said above... And here is the final product. I will be adding a few more coats of oil/wax, But I like the way it looks :)




Sorry for the bad quality, The room was a bit dark and had bad lighting.

Nice work. I think it would be a great addition to a matching headstock too.

Yeah, at first I was going to use ovankol... But it was quite a bit harder to work with than the wenge. So I gave the wenge a shot and liked the turn out. I think it looks a tad out of place at the moment as the wenge is still a bit light. I figure once the oil soaks in, It will darken the wood up a bit.

I'd imagine you'd proalby be able to make a few of the to sell....heck i'd definitely buy one.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it. The problem is I have different screw holes in my bass unlike the other warwicks (modified like everything else I do) So I would have to make them without screw holes and let the buyers drill theyre own holes... Or, I would drill my own and let the people put new holes into theyre headstocks :P I'm sure I could match it up to my original screw holes on the bass though. I have a little wenge left over so I may make another and try to fit it to another warwick and see how it goes. Maybe I'll give it a shot later today...
 
I didn't like the idea at first - but i like the outcome.
Looks much nicer than i ever thought.

But I think I'd rather stay with my standard.
 
Good work Casey! BUT

To be honest with you (and I usually am) I voted NO. As much work you put into that piece, it doesn't make it for me at all.

Make a matching headstock instead. :shock:

I did a similar project early this year involving ebony trussrod covers with MOP stars inlaid into them. Built 5, only 4 fit due to the holes being pre-drilled and not lining up, and there was still a little bit of sanding to get them to make it between the tuners. All in all, fun mod and a great way to add even more personality :P ~M~

I also have a minor penchant for modifying things to fit my needs EXACTLY (not to mention, for shits and giggles!).

Nice work there dude...your next assignment: Ovangkol pickup covers!
 
I just got a few sheets of ovankol in the mail... & making another cover out of it right now :)
 
I'm finishing up one of the ovankol ones right now... pics up a little later :)
