Hey Jan, it's a bit far fetched maybe, but there is something like a low C# string right ?? Any chance Warwick can make such a bass ?? They just need to obtain this friggin' thick string, modify the nut and stuff..............Would you be interested ?? Just wondering.............. 8)

There are such things as low C# strings around, but they are not really applicable in the "four string, donwtuned" context of the Dark Lord... Eventually people will get taht low, and thare will be a demand for it, but personally, I like relatively high tension on my strings, so my .195 gauge low E on my Knuckle's 39.55" scale will probably be fine, but a C# string on a 35" scale will not be to my liking, I'm pretty sure... ( I mean even B-strings usually never are, I use .140s or .145s for my Bs...)

If you're going that friggin' low (the low C#), you just cannot make the strings infinitely thicker right ?? I mean, many bass manufactures have a 34" 4 stringer, but the 5 and 6 stringers are 35"..................And that's for the low B................Maybe increasing scale length is a more "natural" solution in compensating string tension than just increasing string thickness when you go that low............ :idea:

I see you are learning well, young padawan!

Your reasoning is the whole idea behind the 39.55" scale length of the Knuckles...

With increasing thickness, strings lose definition, articulation, and well, playability... Which means you can only go so far through just increasing string diameter. Increasing scale length allows for increasing tension, which is a good thing for articulation and playability, while keeping the increase of string diameter in check...

And yes, when you consider the "natural" evolution of string instruments that led to the current 41-43" "full scale" double bass, increasing the length of the string to lower the pitch is indded the more "natural" way to go...

Might want to go with a 5-string broadneck and a soapbar, then...
