Hi doods,
i recently jammed fretless only with my korean spector legend custom, and loved every minute of it. And have decided that the bass might be worthy of spending some time and money to make it just how i like it. It has couple of things that bug me (but its pretty good as i got it for 450 bucks)
The first is the HP neck, its sticky as hell and i hate the feel of paint on a neck. The two options I have are stripping it and tung oiling it, or just going over it with some 000 steel wool to make it more satiny. The prob is that its a set neck, so its not an easy job and the whole where to stop removing finish thing becomes an issue.
The second thing its it has an EMG 3 band but 2 vol controls, which i cant get used to, how hard would it be to get it converted to master vol/pan? is it just a matter of switching a pot and some wires? (the pups are EMG hiZ cheepee passive bumhuckers).
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Augie,
It is safe to do the neck. You can tape it, so you know where to stop, I guess it is not a difficult job. Well, I did that on my bass, and I was pretty sloppy, but still, I have now a great oil finished neck:)

About the electronics, I suggest you to reconsider, because the VV is a very nice configuration. Instead of having 50-50%, you have two pickups with 100% output. The sound is different. Plus IMHO you get the best sound by turning one of them down, so one pickup at 100%, and another one at 80%' thing you cannot do with pan pot.

Hey Flo, thanks for a pre-quote bc that's how I feel exactly. I just got my Aguilar obp-3 hooked up and I keep the front pickup at about 80%. V/V FTW.

And now that your talking about it I might also work on the neck of my cheapo Spector fretless.
 
OK, I;ll give the stock electronics another shot, might be worth a pup upgrade at some point as well...But neck first! I am starting to mask it out, if i mask a line then score it with a craft knife do you think that will give me a sharp line where the paint ends? I kinda want to put some nice lines in the areas where the colour comes back in.
 
It depends on the paint I guess. My Warwick had a very solid - glassy paint, it was difficult to work.
 
Stripping the back of the neck shouldn´t have to be a problem. You need the right tools (sanding paper and stuff) and some work on it.
 
The sanding wont be an issue, its just the transition where the bare wood ends and the untouched paint continues. I'll give it a shot, if i cant pull the lines i want i can always sand more off......worst case scenario is a totally stripped bass with half ofthe paper thin top sanded off.

You could put a binding strip over the sanded/non sanded join to tidy it up.
 
good call verb, if I can't pull clean lines with a blade and sand paper I can bind the edge. I'll hereto the pics coming
 
agustin you'll have to tape the other side like this because it's your hand that wants the natural feel and not your thumb.

I play with very little hand contact on the neck, its mainly my thumb that sticks to the glossy crap.you can see that this little spike is above the nut, so it shouldn't get in the way too much. and I think if I use a fine sanding cylinder on a dremmel with much care I should be able to do these lines.

Don t do it too hard , sometimes , only sand in to get a satin finish , don t need to get to the woods , but it s a nice project in there

Cheers man, I've seen that, i think what i'll do is satin it first, and see how i like it, it might be fine with just a light sand. And if its not i can always keep going and end up with an oil finnish neck.
 
Bugger, now i scored the edges of the finnish last night i am worried it will end up too thin wen i remove the gloss......oh well. in for a penny in for a pound.
 
Remove all the finish from everywhere and make it all naked. By all means.
 
Why dont you try to make it satin- like first? Then if you don't like it, remove all the finish.
