I think Im going crazy, I need help!

I just played through all my basses in succession, and Ive come to realize that I dont like my Thumb BO 5 as much as I used to. It doesnt seem to have the punch I want. Can people with Thumb BO 5 strings give me their on board preamp EQ and amp EQ settings? Im thinking maybe Im not set up right and would like to try some different approaches to this bass.


Seriously, if it doesnt start winning me back, its going on the ebay.

1st knob. all the way up
2nd. halfway, middle setting
3rd. all up

for my amp settings I'm still working on mine but I found something that works for me that sounds good while trying to fine tune it to what I'm in search of my dream tone.

they are GHS boomers that are only about a month old. do they lose their newness that fast??? my daddarios didnt.....

Yep... I usually have this kind of eqing done while playing death metal... I found I can get a real Alex Webster (cannibal corpse) tone when I boost the mids ALOT with quite a bit of treble and the bass up about 75% all on my amp. Also I use d.r. fat beams and they sound pretty awesome on my thumb.

If you're lacking punch, you might need to adjust your mids and lows. You might try setting the mid and treble halfway and bass all the way up and pan the blend more towards the neck pickup, then slightly add more mids to your liking.

If all else fails, you can sell me your bass mwahaha.

they are GHS boomers

In my little personal string experiment I did a while back, I found the Boomers to be somewhat lacking. Acoustically they seemed to have little output, and amplified it was the same. Just didn't seem to give back what I put in. They came back off quick smart.

What else have you tried? I use DR Hi-Beams or Lo-Riders on my current basses, and did on my old Thumb broad neck 5 (and everything else I've owned in the past 10 years, which is only a few). If you haven't tried a good stainless steel string on your thumb, then do it.

What amp are you using? A bit of power through 10's should have a thumb knocking people over. I've just bought an Ampeg 610 (shipping from the USA), and with my amp bridged to a little over 2kW, it should hit hard

I also use very flat eq. Not too long ago I figured out I was trying to eq my Fender to sound like something it wasn't. Once I started enjoying it for what it was, I really dug it. I like the natural sound of the bass rather than an overly eq'd sound. Don't forget that you can also cut frequencies as well as boost. LOTS of people forget this :?
