I've had my bass for about a year, and ive had a tech mess around with it twice. i bought a new set of strings and i decided to take them off. As i was unwinding the strings, the (i think it's the nut), completely came off, the only thing that was holding the nut in place was the strings. the piece that holds the strings itself has signs of breaking, but what was underneath it looks like something may have broken off. there is also nothing for the screws on the nut to screw into, the piece behind it had screw dents but there was no hold or anything for it. i am in Toronto, however i am a little lost. How much could something like this cost me? is that piece supposed to come out when the strings are taken off? i am thinking maybe the tech broke it, and put it back without telling me. i am just unsure of what to do. Any advice would be appreciated. thank you.

after looking at some pictures i can gurantee the bottom piece of the nut was missing, and just the top piece was strapped in, being held by the strings. I have a sneaking suspicion that this screams of a bad tech, but i don't know for sure. there is stil a very small amount of plastic where the first piece was supposed to be attached to. Is a repair shop gonna be able to get rid of that?

Hi,

it sounds to me you have a JAN2 installed on your bass. As a matter of fact, with the new JAN3, the only thing that holds the nut in place are the strings as well !! With your JAN2 (I think), the tabs on the side used to hold the nut in place, but these tabs can brake off easily (and they did apparantly)...............But do not worry, it is a common thing to happen (and most likely was the reason for Warwick to redesign it to the JAN3), and the complete nut can be replaced by the JAN3 in a few minutes. In case you actually have the JAN2 (a picture would comfirm this), call or e-mail Dana B. Goods, and ask for the JAN3. You should be able to get this for free !!! :D Do specify the model and year of your bass, and of course, whether you're a right handed or left handed player.

You're welcome man. :D A guitar repair shop should be able to have this fixed; it should be no problem. 8) Don't let them charge you for the nut. Like I said, it can be ordered for free (for a limited time I think), and do check out the manual just to get an idea of how much work is required to have it done: don't let any tech tell you that it took them 2 hours or something............
By the way, the missing of the two tabs is not necessarily a reason to have it fixed/changed. It's just a cosmetical thing..............On my Thumb 4 NT, the tab on the E-string side broke off too..................Just to let you know it is not a must to have it replaced. :wink:

This is normal. The screws only make the nut go up and down, and they're not supposed to screw into the base or something. Indeed you should have tiny dents on the base where the screws are located.
 
ahhh ok cool. how would i string the bass then with nothing holding the nut down?

Start with the two centre strings, those are the D and A string. Then add the G and E string. It would only go wrong if you start with the E string, and tune it to E when no other strings are placed first.............Get it ?? I do believe this is also the way to string the bass if you have the new JAN3...........

Start with the A string first, then move outwards. This procedure will also help keep from breaking the replacement unless you can get a JAN3. It's an easy fix. ~M~

I broke my JAN2 and replaced it myself (with another JAN2 as there weren't any JAN3s then). If I can do it, anyone can...

But any doubts, take it to a pro, you'll be fixed up in no time!
