help identifying this corvette

i'm looking to buy this bass from a friend but he and i have no idea of the model or the year it was made, he thinks its a special edition... can anyone help me?

Well the pickups make me think its a FNA so it could be and custom shop
FNA. But the truss cover is an old style truss cover. That could have been
replaced though. They also put that truss cover on the Streamettes. I don't
think it's a Streamette though. It has at least a JAN 2 so it's not to old.

I would say that its a custom shop FNA with a maple fretboard, swamp ash
back, maybe afzelia front (or some other different wood), and a new truss
cover. Very nice. You should definitely get it if it's in good shape.

The ash-bubinga body is pretty odd. Never seen one.
Maybe that is a CS ax. With that body shape and PU
config, it would catagorically be an FNA JazzMan, and
any FNA is still considered a version of Corvette.

My own, dead stock, FNA JazzMan 5 sold recently for
about $1100, and it had numerous, but all very small,
nicks, thumb wear, etc. It was sold on consignment,
so $1100 was a retail price. Friend-to-friend it coulda
been lower. Also mine was a 5-string.

If that one is in much better cosmetic condition, and
if the unique wood combination results in a tone and
a general versatility that really rocks your boat, you
hafta consider you'll never see another one like it.

My feeling is that if your friend wants $1100 or less I
would be a friend and BIN at his asking price. This is
especially the right thing to do if he's already let you
borrow it for extensive "compatibility" testing.

Frankly, if you choose to pass, I'd really like for your
friend to get in touch with me. I'm a sucker for maple
fretless basses. Sure it has frets now, but defretting
is like minor surgery, an "office procedure"; but to
actually replace a whole FB ? Thaz "Major Medical".

Forgot all about that possibility. OTOH I never really knew
just what they look like, or the specs. But if it IS a GC SE,
wouldn't that conveniently also date it ? 2001 or close to ?

I just noticed that it also doesn't have a coil tap switch on it. So there was also a change in the electronics.

I'm pretty sure it is one of the GC special editions. They did a special edition of the Thumb that was almost identical to the 2001 Warwick Limited Edition as well...

I see. Can anyone find a picture of the GC limited edition. It would help.

The serial number would at least give us an idea as to when the bass was made.

I think someone on the forum knows what the whole serial number means if I'm not mistaken. Maybe Greg. I'm not sure.

+1 on that GC LTD FNA Jazzman. I have seen them there on the bay from time to time. I also see that detail that there is no togle switch for the humbucker ... weird!!!

I do not see "MEC" written in the pickups, maybe the owner did a swap of pick ups.
