Hi,
I'm new here and just about to get my first Warwick bass.I was hoping some of you fine people could give me a bit of advice.

For my 40th I plan to get either a NT Thumb or a NT $$ Corvette.
I play mainly fingerstyle but also muck around with Slap'n'pop. What's the tonal difference between these Basses.

What's the tone difference between the Ash and Bubinga NT Corvette.I do plan to try them but I need some pointers. :!:

Hope someone can help.

Many thanks. :D

Hello, slipperman... and welcome!

I'm sure plenty of members will chime-in with answers, but it can be really difficult to explain tone with words. After some time on here, the 2 most common word descriptions I've heard of the Thumb are 'growl' and 'cut', as in, cuts through the mix. For the $$ NT (which is newer, so less have experience with her) they would be 'punch' and 'versatile'. But the default answer will always be 'play them both', because only you know what sound you're after...

G'day slipperman,welcome aboard & happy birthday.
Are you getting back into bass playing by any chance?
I ask because I got back into playing bass at 38,after a 20 year break, with a Warwick Thumb NT5.I seem to meet alot of guys that doing it.If so,good on ya mate.
As far as differences between those models goes,it's by far best to try them both. But there are some things, that alot of us agree on,which are,
The $$ pickup configuration can take some getting used to for slappers,in that the large pickup area can make popping rather difficult.I didnt experience this, but mainly coz the pickups were set rather low on the $$'s i tried. Some $$ owners say that the ash version can get a little muddy when the lows are boosted. The NT $$ has tremendous clarity,so I dont know if the ash $$ NT will have this issue.
The Thumb NT's,some say suffers from neck dive. This is a common opinion, but isnt always the case.I didnt notice this at all,but the bass does sit slightly flatter than most.If you notice this,& it bothers you,but you love the tone.I'd suggest a Streamer stage 2.But I'm biased.
Good luck with your hunt mate. This is gonna be alotta fun. :)

In my opinion, the Bubinga body wood gives a tighter, more focused mid range - nice and "growly", whilst the Ash bodies can have a tendency to get more on the scooped side of things. Nice big bottom - but less mids than the Bubinga.

From a purely ergonomic perspective, I prefer the heavier Bubinga bodies - I find for me at least that they balance better than the lighter Ash bodies.

;)

I apologize in advance, slipperman, but I have to hijack this thread for just a minute.

Eberbachl, my friend. Holy crap! You're going to have an amp in every room of your house if you keep buying combos! Do you own stock or what? Just razzin' ya.

:P

Ok, carry on...

Nope - I just love gear!!!

:D

...and I gotta say I ain't finished yet :D

I think I'll also get a first generation 12" Blue Cab 30 (mine is the 10" version - basically a beefed up Blue Cab 20), and I'm seriously thinking I need a Sweet 15.3 and Sweet 25.2 as well.

+1, or a Streamer stage 1. :)

BAH!
Stage 2 will improve you ability to pull more women,or men,or whatever puts a tilt in your kilt.

Hey Slipperman, why you chose between these two specific models? I mean, they have nothing in common really, so you still can be opened to all the models in your search.

I think we could help you more if you tell us what sound are you looking for.

Thumb- if you like to play with your right hand on the bridge pickup, then maybe this is your bass. It has a very pronounced Bridge pickup/ Jaco style on steroids sound. It is low, without being deep. Cuts through like no other bass on the planet.
the $$ is warm, round, deep, fat, etc. Pretty much the oposite.

So please, tell us first what are you looking for, and we can start from there.

This is true, but i like to play near the bridge, but i like the fact that the $$ mellows out the aggresive sound i get from plucking the string back that far. so, like everyone else said, play everything you can!

Welcome! They are gonna be different, thats for sure. I'd say both are similar due to their uniqueness in pickup configuration. If i was going on a tone scale both would be at opposite ends and the streamers in the middle.

Both will have clarity punch and the warwick tone....

The thumb will be a thumb, so it'll cut through the mix have a very articulated low mid tone, and sound like nothing else. Seriously there is no bass that sounds like a thumb its a very unique bass.

The $$ NT will have deeper tone. The maple neck gives it some really snappy highs and a great growl. The ash or bubinga will have little effect really, bubinga will have a more mid presence with a more compressed tone. The ash will have a more open sound with deeper lows and not as much mids, and be lighter.

As for slapping, the $$ is perfectly able to do this but your style may need adjusting, as it can feel a little cramped when slapping, where the thumb won't have this problem.

tbh for this you'd want a SS1 and bring the funk to get everybody moving....

Hi,
Many thanks to everyone who has answered,I know it's a bit of a funny question when tone is concerned, but I like a funky tone but with a solid low end and I realy like to muck about with slap style but some say the corvettes pickups get in the way a bit(I do have small hands). What a choice!

One other thing do all the Warwick Basses have the Reinforcement metal bars either side of the truss rod?

Once again many thanks.

I love Thumbs and have several of them because of that. seems to me maybe you're looking for a tone similar to the Thumb. check out the stores around you and try one up. ... worst case scenario GC has several used ones all the time and if you decide to return it (even if they ship it to you) you can return it to the local store within 30 days.

All the Warwick necks are the same.
The corvette STD, will give you a clean classic slap sound.
The $$ too. Their pickups didn't bothered me at all, I thing there is enough space left for slap.

Try the Corvette STD bubinga while you're at it... it's a lovely bass and I would have bought one if I wasn't such a thumb-head!

Hi,
I was reading in an oldish copy of Guitar Buyer(I think!) a while ago that the Thumb BO don't have a very good slap tone, they were reviewing the 5 string.
I thought the BO would soung great for slap'n'pop....Would anyone comment.

Many thanks. :D

The Thumb Bass, BO, and NT, have a very "special" slap sound. It is very similar to a Jazz bass on the bridge pickup. I've heard similar slap sounds at STu Hamm, and some Prince records.

I like the sound, but it is not for everybody. Anyway, it is wrong to say it is a bad slap sound, it is not everybody's cup of tea, because, most of the people prefer the neck pickup for slap.

Hi Slipperman :)

Well it's obvious, isn't it?

The Thumb NT baby!!!!

Simply the best bass ever made
