Hey everyone,

Ive been playing bass since the day after i turned 12 and im 15 now, so my fingers have grown rather long. Since my hands are so big, my fingers frequently get cold and hinder my ability to play to my best. Is there a way other than running my hands under warm water to effeciently warm my hands up for a long period of time?

Thanks,
-Jesse

well, i have this problem too, but it may actually be a disorder called raynauds.
its a hereditary disorder, and a pain in the ass. i got it from my dad, my sister has it too. so ask your dad and your grandparents if they have cold hands. there are pills for it, but its basicly heart medicine...

nice.....

well, try playing beetovens 9th (the real deal) in a 40 degree room. its doable, but get it checked (i need to).

I have the answer to your problem! I too have freezing cold hands most of the time. I found that taking fish oil pills really helps the circulation and will keep your hands a bit warmer and keep them up to speed :)

Thanks ALOT CASEY!!!! Ill give it a try! Also ive had orange flavored cod liver oil before and to tell you the truth i liked it, ya think thatll help too?

also, what kind should i get? i see that there are a lot of different types of fish oil pills, what would you recommend?

The brand is "Natures Bounty"

It's 1200mg of fish oil per pill, I take about 6 per day... 3 in the morning and 3 at night. I use to also take Alfalfa pills which worked pretty good for arthritis.

Basicly the fish oil helps the circulation... It's my secret to all those insanely fast tapping solos I do :P

running it under warm water is all i need, that the best and oldest trick :D

Hey Jesse, first of all, at your age a person can have a lot of little problems which are physiological not illness. Because you are growing so fast, imagine that it takes some time to proper vascularisate your extremities you big guy!
However, if you want to have warm hands, always try to stimulate your body to do it. If you put your hands in warm water, your body will do everything possible to keep them cold, so you might try it with ice :-)
Shake your hands well before playing.

Good luck mate!

I've always done the warm water thing. i usually keep them under for 5 good minutes for the full effect. I've also recently got a good pair of gloves for evening gigs.

Actually yes, Juzzo, because as Florin was saying - your body will try to stay at a constant temperature. So if something is happening which could change this, your body will try to counter-act this. Like shivering when it is cold, sweating when it is hot etc...

I would both hold my hands under warm water for a while but also do some excercises with my hands and fingers. It's important to be a little active to get some varm blood flowing through your fingers :-)

Yes, hand exercises would be useful as they would improve circulation of blood (and therefore warmth) to the hands

Ehmmm.... Warm up 15 min. before playing the "real" deal? Scales, arpeggios - you name it. And it's very important to stretch first - like in sports  This really oughta be the best way...

Another very important thing to remember to avoid cold hands while playing, is to ensure that your bass has "room temperature" before you start playing. If the bass is cold when you start playing, it will suck all warmth out of your fingers the first minutes unless you play fast and aggressive music.

Living in Northern Ireland, its usually freezing over here most of the year. I find that I feel like I might as well have fish sticks for fingers. Before I went on stage last night I pleased our audience to the sight of a bespectacled loon doing pushups on the stage for about 5 minutes. I've found that its the only true way of getting the blood pumping enough to play well. I split the back of my blood stained labcoat. And then our drummer kicked me in the back and knocked over my drink........good times.

So yeah, jump around, shadow box, kung fu your friends, do starjumps/squat thrusts etc etc. Any short burst of physical exertion should help.

If you start feeling a bit cold on stage (Is that even possible? =P ) Just move, jump, bang your head, do a damm stagedive! :D
