my 97 fortress has the red stain finish. is this an oil or satin finish???
I'm the first owner and it came this way from warwick. as far as cleaning goes I just use lemon oil and thats it
reason for asking is shiney spots. some areas have the satin dull look and other areas are real shiney like its been buffed out...
can I rub or buff the whole bass to get a uniform look?
what would I use to do this???
 
id say it would be a satin finish, so whatever you do never wax it. or it will be fucked.
 
yea i used to wax my Corvette good thing i stopped! The finish has lightened a bit but it didnt become crap good thing i was warned before it got to that point.
 
You have a coloured oil finish Gonzo.You should never use lemon oil or wax on this or it will fade & become blotchy.A damp cloth is all it needs.

OK. I don't clean it alot. basicly when I do a restring about every 3-4 months. I use the lemom oil to break up all the sweat and dirt. I'll try just wiping it down.
is there anything to use that would give a uniform look to it.
so far I haven't notice any effects of the lemon oil changing it. like I said it came the way it is from warwick.. if its an oil finish shouldn't be shiney?

Gloss finishes are shiney,oil finishes are generally matte,except for when you buff off the wax but it usually doesnt last.
Can you post some pics please mate?I'd like to see what you mean by blotchy.Any change in the finish will take place over a long period,so you wont notice it right away.A bit like getting old.One day you wake up,your compass,which usually points north at that time of day decides it's going to droop to the south. :lol:
 
I can still hang wet towels from mine in the morning! :shock: :lol: :lol:
 
I tryed to take some pics but I could never get the difference between the shiney and matte look to show.
its pretty much all uniform shiney high gloss on the back. on the front its shiney on the upper horn, where my forearm would rest and all the way around the butt end, and between the bridge and tail peice.
the dull or matte area is under the strings , the lower horn under the neck and back to the knobs. some shiney area around the knobs too.

from a distance say 8-10 feet you can't see it unless you really look at it.
while holding it and looking down on it you see everything.
 
Normal wear and tear bro. The coloured oil finishes have a satin clearcoat, which over time with any abrasion will inevitably become glossy. All clear finishes are naturally gloss, they add flattening agents to make satin, matte, etc. These agents soften the finish. The abrasion of the bass on your body (the back) or your hand/arm on the front will take the finish down to gloss. A satin coated neck is often shiny in spots in a matter of months. Hence the reason it's on the back, around the knobs, but not under the strings.

satin clearcoat!! so its not just an oil only finish.. cool..
