Explorer-style Bass Project

For Christmas my lovely and most awesome wife bought me a finished neck (padouk/ebony) and mahogany body blank from Warmoth....thought I would share! Below are pictures of the neck and body blank along with the design I have in mind.

By the way, for those of you working on design for the Warwick contest, Visio works pretty well for this sort of stuff!

I think the body looks a bit small compared to the neck. Other than that, looks like a cool bass.

Yep - I tend to agree with you. The body blank is the limiting factor though. I don't think that Warmoth body blanks are really intended for an Explorer-style...they're a couple inches short for that, but I'm gonna go for it anyways.

I thought mahogany might be a bit more interesting. I'm sorta toying with the idea of adding a thin sheet of an exotic looking wood on the front and back.

I like the bottom horn a lot, although the top "horn" slight curve inside I don't. Perhaps it should
curve outwards, I think it would look better. I really dig this kind of projects.

that's the old ancient secret of the balancing act of the Fortress thanks to the upper horn it is a bass that balances well with nature, the enviromnment and does not pollute.... and is player and eco-friendly. :wink: :lol: :lol:

I am going to suggest something unique ..... since this is what you're after.... what about a Jazzman set up on the pickups and elecs? or a twin J and a slanted J at the neck? or even a twin P setup?

huh...didn't even realize I created a fortress like shape, though it's a bit more endowed

If you take a look at several Explorer-Type Guitars and Basses, you will see, that they are not made out of one piece. Before you change the form to something you wouldn't like as much as the explorerform, try to check how much wood is missing, and if you would cut enough at other places to glue the missing parts to the mainbody (thats like other manufactuerers do it too).

I just bought a book about guitarbuilding myself, as I want to build one from scretch. Just need a room, where I can work with wood without getting hit from my wife.

I was thinking about something like this. The curve maintains the "explorerness".
