Ebay issue with buyer

What do you think of this issue? I sold a bass which is my Fender Lyte. They weight between 6 and 7 pounds. All the ones on ebay say 6 to 6 1/2 pounds. I sell the bass and the buyer who bought if for a freind says "the bass weighs 7 lb 12oz (which is bull) and wants a refund. Everything I stated was in line with others for sale and completed sales archive. Should I have to refund this since they say it is heavier than I estimated? I may be off 8 oz or something but they never even asked a question to what the exsact weight in lbs and ounzes is or anything. The person they bought if ofr asked me in a unknow prior email and I stated it is estimated off my home scale and is propably only acurate to 1/2 pound.

Am I wrong to not refund them????
 
No. If he didnt ask you directley, dont refund. 1/2 a pound is not worth a refund.

What the heck is a Fender Lyte? I'm assuming its a smaller bass so it weighs less.

You've always gotta be careful with ebay adverts, cause ppl can get a bit funny sometimes. If you said the bass weighs between 6 & 6 1/2 pounds, and it actually weighs more, than that is technically false advertising (like saying the bass is green, when actually its pink), but if you said the bass weighs approximately 6 - 6 1/2 pounds then you've every right to say that you only gave an estimation on the weight and not refund. It does all sound like a lot of hassle over a few ounces, but I'm trying to look at this from the perspective of an ebay official, which is what you may be dealing with in the near future ;)

Can you give us a link to the ad? Then i'll be able to give you a better answer as to what I think.
 
I regularly ask for accurate weights of any bass that I'm interested in as I have a recurring shoulder injury and heavy basses give me grief after a long gig. I have to confess that if I had asked for an 'accurate' weight and it arrived 1/2lb heavier than the heaviest weight indicated by the seller, then I might be inclined to feel aggrieved. However... if you gave vague guesstimates and the buyer knew that the weight you gave could have been out by 1/2lb then you are within your rights to refuse BUT be aware that eBay rules now have the balance tipped heavily in favour of the buyer and if he/she decides to push this you may well find that unfortunately you lose regardless of the fact that you were simply doing the best you could with the info that you had. Obviously if the buyer is talking out of his backside and telling lies about the weight of the bass then you are in the right all of the way, though the onus may be on you to prove that the bass is within the weight parameters that you gave.

Even 7#12oz is super lite. Some Ebay buyers are just buttheads. I would let him return it for a refund then just relist. It'll save your feedback rating.

The thing is that the actual buyer never asked for weight clarrification or questioned the weight. It was another potential buyer that then ended up having her buy it for him with her account. Also, 2 basses before mine and one on ebay now all have had the same listed weight so I think I'm in the right ballpark for listing weight.

This is what was told to the guy when he asked (not the buyer),

His question (not the buyer)
"Just a quick question. I've owned several Lytes over the years but the lightest I've ever seen is
7.0 lbs. Is this bass a 6.0 on the dot?"

"My Scale is digital but only measures to the nearest 1/2 pound and it shows 6 but maybe it is off a little........."
I suggested the scale could be off a little.

Difficult one... however, I think you could be dealing with someone who is prepared to be unreasonable about it... if it was me I'd cut my losses and have it returned. In all my dealings with Ebay (and I only ever sell stuff, never buy) I've found they are increasingly coming out in favour of the buyer, which is why I sell stuff less and less now. I've dealt with some awkward ones in the past, but my first instinct is to be polite and say "send it back" in order to preserve my 100% positive feedback
 
I just recently got a negative feedback after 7 years and over 100 guitars sold on Ebay. It dropped me to a 98%.I have 377 Positives and 1 negative and that somehow dropped me to 98%. I told Ebay I wouldn't sell anymore unless they investigate/correct the bogus negative. If you have 100%, it's definitely worth the trouble to keep it that way. To me 98% just looks crappy.
 
it might be better to take the bass back but i think you did nothing wrong and the buyer is nitpicking if they were so worried about the weight they should have asked fora accurate weight.

+1 My Squire weighs 9 pounds, and It's really not heavy at all!
 
I hate to say it but you do state 'it only weighs 6 pounds' in the advert, so if it actually weighs more than technically it is false advertising. As others have suggested, i would give the guy a refund (make him pay for return postage though!!) and relist the item, if you had a bit of a bidding war going last time then i'm sure you'll be able to sell it again.

It'll also be worth contacting anyone who you know bidded for it and offering it to them for whatever their maximum bid was, ensuring a quick sale.

Just my opinion, of course, but I think thats what I would do.
 
You did state in your answer to a question visible on your listing that the bass weighed 6lb. 'If' (and I am not saying this is the case) the bass actually weighs 7lb 12oz as the buyer has indicated, then that is almost 30% heavier than you quoted!

I don't consider 7lb 12oz heavy and I am very picky about my weights so I can't see what grievance the buyer can have but then again maybe they have an injured shoulder/back and they specifically need a bass that weighs 6lb?

Don't get me wrong I'm not criticising you or siding with the buyer, I'm simply looking at facts and trying to be completely impartial... exactly as the eBay or PayPal representative/adjudicator will likely be. I hope you get this resolved amicably.

Do worries, I'm asking for non-biasedfeedback. However the truth is the bass weighs no more than 7lbs max. The 7lb12oz is bull***it. He even stated they are around 7 even. This one is lighter since it active w/ 3band pickups a larger holed out area for the electronics than a normal "Lyet bass he is referring to" and has a soapbar that has more wood removed and holed out. It should be lighter if not nor more than 7lbs which is 8 oz more than I suggested to him. I waiting for aresponse back from them stating I feel I'm in the right here and see what they want to do. I appreciate everyones input and if they push the issue further I think I'll just do the return.

Oh yeah, the buyer has 100% feedback too so I doubt if she wants a negative on her account as well.

LOL no I'm not the buyer. One final comment re. the buyer's 100% feedback; you can't leave them negative feedback even if you wanted. Unfortunately one of the new 'rules' of eBay; sellers can't (even if they wanted) leave ANY form of negative feedback for a buyer... no matter how much in the wrong they are! :0(

I used to sell a bunch of stuff on ebay.

Then it became a money suck. Fees for everything.

I would have him ship the bass back to you.
it's not worth the hassle.

That's one of the reasons why I'd think hard about using ebay again... and I really don't follow the logic behind that one

That's the reason why I stopped selling stuff on eBay. I will happily buy things off eBay still...
 
Crap...they said they weighed it on 3 scales and it says 7lb 12oz. ARGGGGGG. Anyway do I still end up paying paypal and ebay if I do the refund? Also Don't they only get the purchase price and not shipping refunded? I said no retuns in my auction. I'MMMMMMM PISSED. I was going to buy a Streamer jazzman last night with the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
