Ok a little esoteric but here goes... If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it does it make a sound?
To say whether or not he is ill or quit/stoped playing bass because you don't see him hot doggin around on youtube or NAMM does not mean that he quit. Bootsy can look at a bass and it will start playing!
You could have said the same thing about Larry Graham a couple of years ago...
I did a little digging and found something recent. Here he is in 2008 at a James Brown Tribute he put on.

Not to diminish the sentiment of encouraging and loving an artist so much that you just want to see him play and celebrate his funkyness (Paul I reread your post starting this thread and with the exception of stating that he is riding on his stuff from 60's and 70's-a little harsh no?- it would be great so see him with a bass strapped on groovin and smiling). If you have not seen the Unsung documentary on him it is a great little window on his life and the challenges he has overcome.
