Is it just me? Does Bootsy still play bass? I haven't seen this guy actually play in some time. Let me know if you've seen him recently playing a bass. A new project or album would be nice! This guy is riding on stuff he did in the 60's and 70's. That's my rant, Thanks.

He was at the L.A. Bass Player Live event - Warwick gave him a birthday cake. :)

Dunno if he played or just hung out and said "funk" a lot.

Funny, I was kinda thinking that as well Noodles...

One of my favourite Bootsy performances:

I've seen it at Frankfurt. This guy is a genius, he does not need to touch the bass anymore, he can kick out butts with a flute, or pen and a piece of paper!

His rhythm feeling is simply amazing, he is a monster! Really, you gotta see him. I can only imagine how he is with a bass in his hands.

From another planet!

Come on! I dare someone to post evidence of Bootsy playing in say... the last 18 monthes. I DARE YOU! Hey, if he has medical condition...that's understandable. I realized one day on Funk University - this guy never plays anything! He has other people play examples. I'm throwing the B*llsh*t flag. I say he's all motor mouth and I dare say he's a gimmick. Too harsh? Maybe so. I'm tired of him popping up everywhere and doing nothing.

My real frustration is BOOTSY is an awesome bassist but why has he stopped? Just cause your old you can still thump. Look at John B., Chuck Rainey, Larry Graham, Lee Sklar, Jack Bruce....

In the bath tub maybe! Too many rings maybe. Alright I get off Bootsy...for now.

The last thing I know of that Bootsy did was his work on the Superbad soundtrack, but even still that was like 2007

First of all he does not look or feel old at all. He is slim, fit, and he has a huge energy when he is on stage. I don't think he has a problem playing bass, he looks like a guy that can kick butt anytime if he wants to.

If you ask me yes, it is way too harsh.

Call me old fashioned, but I chose to always show respect to the guys that are in that category you mentioned. There is one Bootsy I know, and no matter what he does now I will never forget what he did before.

He is Bootsy Collins, he left a huge legacy for us, and only one thing we can do: show him respect!

Bootsy has influenced our influences without some of them even knowing it. He's like James Jamerson... in that regard.

With all respect, Paul, i think your rant is pointless. You may like or not Bootsy, as an artist or as a person, that´s a matter of musical tastes. But criticize him because these days he´s not playing bass and just being a public person, at music events like NAMM or things like that is just silly. The guy is a bass and music legend, he has to proof nothing to anybody right now. Is like criticize Zidane or Michael Jordan because they are living from their past days of sports acheivements.

I don´t like Bootsy´s suits, and his signature basses has always seemed to me kinda cheesy, but I respect him because of his work, his legacy to bass players, and I don´t care if he has a purple bass with gold stars and sparkles.

On a deeper thought, we don´t know if the man has arthritis in his hands, or some kind of health condition that has forced him to stop playing gigs, or is just a personal decision, maybe these days he feels better managing his Funk University and appearing at public shows, who knows?....

Salud!
:)

Sorry, Flo, I know I wrote this kinda late, after hi apologized, but I had it in my mind since I saw the thread yesterday.

As a mature conversation, I can see your point though. I tried youtube to look for something with him playing recently. But everything with his name on it, has him standing there while someone else plays a product that he is endorsing.

Not saying this is good or bad, or takes away from his talents and achievements, but in all honesty, would love to see him continue playing. Thats all I think this is about right?

Thank you Adam. I love Bootsy. I am frustrated that he seems to have stopped. I really want a new Bootsy album! I want the funk! But for sometime I have come to realize, he isn't playing anymore. That's all. Who doesn't love Bootsy?

When you see this guy (HUGE GUY!) walking through the masses and the only thing he does is smiling and shouting "ONE!" ... that's the funkiest thing you'll ever see.
I don't know if he's still playing bass - maybe. But he's still Bootsy and he's still funky.
Give me a bass and 2 years to come up with a great lick - it wouldn't be 1/10 as funky as Bootsy. Standing in a room. Alone.

This is an old clip and I'm sure it's been posted here before but this pretty much sums up Bootsy.
