Corvette $$ questions/problems

Like some of you guys know I own a customshop Corvette $$ 4 string in night blue flake finish, MEC pickups and preamp, Ovangkol neck with maple fingerboard.

I really like playing the bass but the sound.. hmmm..
Don't know if it's only me $$ but it's very very muddy.. Not so bright as I think that a MM humbucker should be.

I have a Musicman Stingray 4 stringer and a Modulus Flea 4 stringer aswell and they have WAY better treble and brightness then my $$ 4 have.

Is it only my bass or is it my ears?
 
you just have to adjust the parallel/series functions properly. could have been the amp you were playing on too though.
 
I know what you mean. After owning a NT 5 for a while and then switched to my jazzman 5 I instantly noticed the lack of brightness in comparison. Muddy is exactly the word I used to use. What I did was raise the hieght of the pick up as close to the strings as possible without clicking too much while playing. I then made sure my fretboard and strings were clean and it was way better. I do still have to use the "brightness" button on my svt 3 but then I realized that the nature of the pups being passive is going to give me that slightly muffled sound and I would have to dial in the brightness on the amp. Btw, I owned a MM 5 ray for a while and my Jazzman is brighter. I don't think the maple board is the problem either, once I learned how to dial in the brights it's now clear and raunchy in all coil switching modes and I never have to put the treble past 2/3. Hope this helped.
 
I find the tone of my $$ very muddy too... The more I play it, the more I think it's a good bass but not made for me...
 
is the tone still focused, cear and articulate? because the thing that most annoys me about my yamaha is its so unfocussed and muddy...

Mine was muddy as well until I changed strings (after 6 months of frenetic playing :oops: ). I've also raised the PUs and lowered the action (neck bow). The mud is gone as well as the dead frets. /PAtrik
 
No dead tones/frets.
Brand NEW DR Colour Coated strings, Blue Peacock (can it be the Colour :wink: )

The Pickups are quite close to the strings, and the neck is very straight.

The thing is that If I turn the Treble knob to FULL I'll get the right amount of treble and brightness that I want..

It feels a little sad since it's a customshop bass, Not so funny to own a Customshop bass which you are not 100% satisfied with the sound in..

Accually don't know if I will keep it..
But like Ian said.. It's still a KILLER bass but maybe not the bass for me..
 
I spent about 2 hours trying out a $$ (being a 'Ray owner at the time I thought it would be 'me'), I had convinced meself the tone would 'come' to me with a bit of experimenting. I sent the sales jock off to work out the deal, while he was hitting buttons I picked up a std active vette 4 (ash) - it had 'the tone' in spades (bright/punchy/growly)- no messing with switches, even liked it passive. Changed the deal and saved about £50. Ultimately though I guess I'll lose out when I sell it though as I believe the $$ is more 'desirable' - shame the std is so overlooked.

I have to get a Wick with this finish ! :shock: :shock:
