cleaning frets

I recently bought a used thumb nt and the frets are dirty and look like they are somewhat tarnished, what should i use to clean them. The bass still plays amazing though. lol
 
I once owned stocks in elbow grease but I sold em & invested in the laziness futures market. :wink: If all goes well I'll be buying warwicks with my dividends for some time to come. :D
 
use a rag to remove as much dirt as possible. for the grime and dirt that gets packed on the sides of the frets, use a plastic cleaning pad or some really fine steel wool (zero grade). make sure the wool or pad doesn't contain any chemical cleaning products or soap of any kind.

when all the dirt is removed, you can apply a thin layer of lemon oil. make sure you buy lemon oil that is purpose made so it doesn't contain any extra chemicals such as waxes or other.

voila; your fretboard should look as new!
 
I normally use some kind of brass cleaner solution, covering the wood with masking tape but when I really wanna clean them I use a Dremel drill with a polishing head. :P
 
um... yeah. Oliver is probably more spot on. i kinda missread the post as being about the fretboard, not the actual frets. :oops:

it's too early in the morning here :D
 
I cleaned the frets last week. Just used some "Silver Polish" I had in the cupboard, and : good as new. :wink:
 
I tried to clean my frets but they would'nt have it,something to do with rock n roll street cred. :roll: But the damn alembic insisted on a bubble bath. :oops:
 
LEMON OIL.... BAD, DRYS OUT THE BOARD. THAT CAN OF BEES WAX IS ALL YOU NEED FOR THE BODY, NECK, FRETBOARD AND EVEN THE FRETS. ABIT ON A SOFT RAG WORKED OVER EACH FRET WILL PULL THAT TARNISH RIGHT OFF. TASTE PRETTY GOOD ON TOAST TOO! :lol:
 
did anyone ever try olive oil for the fingerboard? always used it on my t-birds and never had a problem :)
