Cab Question

Someone is selling a cab locally and I think I'm going to get it. Here's the lowdown.

He said he bought it in the 80's. It was originally an Ampeg HS410MX (4x10). But he has since replaced the drivers twice. Currently it still has the original ampeg tweeter cone, but the drivers have been replaced by Pyle Pro 300 watt bass drivers. He says he does have the original hartke drivers lying around but they have the dreaded "loose Dust cap syndrome" -- whatever that means (perhaps someone gets this).

He wants $125 for it, and I've been looking for a cab to get away from my combo amp.

Deal or no deal?

Gotta' plug in and play through it to hear what it sounds like. It's become a bit of a mongrel cabinet for sure, but maybe it will suit your taste sonically.

I'd put an ohmmeter on it to see what kind of true resistance it gives - that way you'll know what kind of juice your amp will be creating when paired up with it.

For $125, it could be a good practice cab to leave at your band space or even a back-up if the sound isn't to your liking for a live show...

as long as you can try before you buy. I've never heard anything good about Pyle stuff (mostly their car audio) so just make sure it sounds okay.

Weren't Pyle drivers (sic) OEM for the 'original' Gallien Krueger cab range? If so then they weren't that shabby!

The loose dust cap might just be that the dust caps are coming unglued from the cones and buzzing when in use.I you get the cab get the drivers and see if they can be fixed.I had a 10"woofer that made a weird sound when driven hard and it ended up that the spider was coming unglued.Glued it back together and it worked fine.
