I really enjoyed it.I'm not a bug fan of Indian music,but I like what I heard.
Jonas' work is an aquired taste & I dig how our forum doesnt automatically become a place for hate & gutless snipes simply coz some people take it personally when someone else voices their critisizm at something they happen to dislike.Personally I prefer to not say anything if I dont happen to like what's being shared.
I'm saying this mainly because the guy in the video is Jonas Hellborg.He works for Warwick & is one of their more high profile endorsers.Woody's post,as usual,is could be taken as borderline offensive.But we all know what to expect from him now & kinda expect posts like these.Personally,your posts reflect alot about your character.The more negative the posts,the unhappier the poster.This is my opinion & doesnt represent Warwick or anyone else.
My opinion is also very high of Jonas as a muso,engineer,bussiness man,etc.The guy's a living legend & an absolute pioneer in the bass/amp/cab business.His career is prolific in every sense of the word.His current playing style is missunderstood by most people,including bass players,which really surprises me.Even if you dont happen to approve of Indian music,or bass & percussion performance,his skill is undeniably unique & virtuosic.

How ever if you are really musician you need critic, why?
Because only in this way you can impruve your music.

Man, if I came down to tell you that IMHO you really suck and have no musical taste at all, would not that be offensive?

Please, if you don't like it, be at least polite about it.
 
Selvaganesh is the best percussionist I've ever seen. He beats patterns that are ridiculously complicated but still sound easy. I saw these guys with Shawn Lane and three other guys on percussion and indian mandolin years ago and it was incredible.

This video is more like two percussionists going at it, which I really like.

Thank you Fillipe.This is exactly what I'm trying to say.Simply adding imho at the end of an insult doesnt lessen the impact of the insult.I dont wanna seem like it's,"let's gang up on the foreigner"day,or,"It's suck up to Jonas coz he's my hero",day.I'm simply trying to "moderate" as politely & with as much tact & fairness as I can manage to without posturing or picking on anyone in particular,but this is Jonas Hellborg & V.Selvaganesh,(who are amongst the best musicians in their respective fields)alive.This is not only an imho thing,it's fact.Like them or loath them,they're capabilities lie far beyond anything most of us cant even get our musical heads around.Even if you're musical abilities are superior to these guys,it's ignorant & juvenile to repeatedly slag them,or anyone else for that matter,off.
 
Very cool vid, not my kinda of music, but damn jonas can play, really enjoyed watching it.
 
I don't see how some of you guys don't see the art in what Jonas Hellborg is doing. Jonas is an amazing bassist and is worthy of praise for his abilities and style. You may not like Indian or eastern influenced music, but you can't deny the musicianship shared by both Mr. Hellborg and V Selvaganesh.

I respect Jonas a lot, he is a fellow Warwick endorser, but regardless of that, he is a very accomplished and wonderful bassist and musician.

Maybe try and watch the video again, with this in mind. You may see the beauty in it after all. :D
 
you have to be very precise with your timing to do this, amazingly good!
 
Normally I really appreciate Jonas's playing - I just don't hear the musicality in this.

There's a Stanley Clarke piece where he plays along to someone tap dancing, (can't remember what it's called but I think it's from 'If this bass could only talk'). Now that, for an abstract piece, was musical.

This I just can't hear any melody, syncopation or any of those elements which typically make something more than just 'spankety spankety/clickety clickety' noise.

It wouldn't be so bad if JH re-invented his slap riff occasionally but it's basically just the same riff repeated ad nauseum.

I don't want to labour my negativity - if it was any other bass player, I'd say the same thing so I don't feel I should moderate what I say because it's JH. If it was a forum member, I probably wouldn't say anything but it's not, he's a professional and well regarded. He's also big enough and old enough to stick up for himself if he felt so inclined.

I was however impressed by his lotus position bass playing though! :D

As soon as anyone here can play this I will acknowledge a lack of musicality...
 
If it can be expressed using any form of musical notation, (7 bar, 5 bar, whatever), ie, put into a time signature, then its music and has musicality. It may suck, but that is a philosophical distinction, not a scientific one. Music is defined scientifically (measurements of time), not philosophically. So to say that anything has no musicality when it can be notated and therefore repeated by others (like an experiment), is a bit of an over-simplification.

Remember, "music is an art form whose medium is sound organized in time."
If any noise can be organized in time then its music and therefore posses musicality.

Or am I crapping in a bucket and calling it art again? :wink: :lol:
 
Very interesting piece. I found myself trying to count it and frankly, I haven't been able to figure it out. By taping along on my desk I was able to keep up and figure it was based on the quater note, thus /4, but after trying twice now, I cant seem to figure out the exact timing they are using. I think it keeps switching, but could be wrong. Counting straight 4/4 doesn't work. At one point I thought I had caught it at 7/4 but that didn't hold up either. I'm off to work and will try again when I get home. Maybe one of you that is far more knowledgeable in theory could figure this out and possibly explain it to me. Perhaps Woody since it is such a boring piece, I'm sure he could figure out what they are doing. As for me, I think Jonas is playing some seriously tasty riffs on this and the timing is definately what makes this piece so interesting to me.

Well, I can definitely hear syncopation here. But sometimes, music isn't much about melody. Heck, a lot of the metal bands I listen (like Behold... The Arctopus, some of you will remember these guys maybe), if I get asked where is the melody in this, I won't be able to answer. Music, to me anyway, is more about expressing an emotion/atmosphere/mood than necessarily playing a melody. I'm also a fan of ambient/noise music, and these are far worst than this in the lack of melody department. If it's not your thing it's ok though.

Much of what is said on this forum is 'over simplification'...for instance, some say a Thumb has growl, yet that's over simplifying the very complex series of tones, overtones, harmonics and subharmonics (blah blah blah) that make up the Thumb sound.

Over simplification makes long, boring paragraphs easy to read, digest and discuss. I think we all know what I mean when I say 'it lacks musicality' in fact I go on to say that it lacks melody and syncopation thus expanding on my previous 'over simplification'.

Well.. Just heard it and the breaks or whatever are really the hard parts I think. The groove (after the breaks) at 1:13 for example is 9/8 then 7/8 repeated 3 times I think then one bar of 9/8 and into break. Something like that...
