Anyone ever taken a Warwick apart? I need to do this for a refinish

I'm waiting for the black hardware to arrive. I'll post a pic or two when I have reassembled her.

I did think of staining the grain but I wanted a subtle finish with not a lot of grain showing through. I did a lot of research into Mary Kaye and other trans finishes and staining the grain and sanding back is one of the methods. Unless one has a fair bit of experience, something like this is rarely going to end up like the original vision, but it's close enough for me. I'm really happy with it and can't wait to put her back together!

i just thought, you could have made the grain pop by using black dye on the swamp ash, then wipe the body with thinner and sand a little bit. that way, the dark parts of the grain become black and the bright parts stay bright.
and then spray the white color, that way the grain would shine through more.
did you think about that ?

Awesome job so far man! I bought a dissheveled Streamer Std that I'm refinishing, and have gone throught the same process as you so far. How did you get the anchors/ferrules (what the heck are they called) that are in the back of the body that the neck screws go into out of the body? I've completely sanded the body but can't finish til I get those out... ugh. Oh, and I want to do a black transparent finish you can see the stain through, any suggestions? The body is very soft Carolena, I don't want it to dent or scratch easily so how can I protect it a little?

Hello mate,

The "collets" you mention are a bit difficult to remove. I used a crosshead screwdriver with the same diameter as the hole and pushed it through the collet from the neck pocket side and waggled it a bit until it loosened. Eventually I got them all out. There are washers/spacers underneath too.

Can't really help you with the black stain. Are you thinking of the Nirvana Black type of finish?

I'll add that mine has picked up a few dents in the paint, it hasn't fully hardened yet and it still smells. I'm not too worried about it but if you want perfection, someone with more knowledge than me will be required :) Check out the ReRanch though, full of useful expert advice about many types of finish including translucesnt, and advantages/disadvantages of different paints. Thanks so much! The body is fully sanded perfectly now- I've hand-sanded every inch, which really brought out the grain. The lighter colored wood seemed to sink in and the dark grain stood out proud, so now I have this incredible ripply texture that I LOVE on my Streamer. I'll try to get the collets out that way, thanks. If you treat the painted body with several coats of spray lacquer, you may find it will "harden" your finish and protect it from casual bumps and bangs that seem to really mar the soft wood easily.

Thanks again for your tips, can't wait to move on to the finishing stages, still have to route for the new pickup and 2 piece bridge.
